The basis of the artwork is an over-painted double-page advertisement (Frieze Magazine) of a Gauguin exhibition in Madrid. The basis of the artwork is an over-painted double-page advertisement (Frieze Magazine) of a Gauguin exhibition in Madrid. The over-painting was digitally photographed and broken down on the computer until the original image began to dissolve. The result was printed out as Ultrachrome inkjet prints and mounted on canvas (collage) with a transparent medium UV protection. Segments of inkjet prints are sanded and cut back to reveal glimpses of paint creeping out from underlying layers. Barely visible beneath the obliterated surface, fragments of text and numerals emerge, recalling written communications, uniting detached image and aggrandized emotion as a parody of media advertisements. The print allows the paint to be its most animal expression of itself, while creating a charming opposition between the sculptural qualities of paint and the flat surface of the print, leaving a picture plane marked by an effortlessly elegant dance of smudges, puddles and saturated strokes.

4 panels, each 200 x 80 cm will be shipped in one crate with the dimension 207 x 90 x 37 cm. The crate needs a week to be build.

Peter Vahlefeld is a contemporary award-winning multimedia artist based in Berlin. The whole social fabric of our society is used as a point of departure for abstraction. He creates his works on the foundation of art marketing materials such as auction house or museum promotional flyers or posters. On this structure, the picture is built up layer by layer using various colors and materials. Painting pigments, as well as a variety of other materials like photo fragments and textiles, give Vahlefeld works their distinct color, tone, and structure. Finally, the images can be classified as startling, exhilarating, colorful, dynamic, rugged, or tactile, owing to their contrasts between analogue and digital painting, the compatibility of many color materials, and elements of production and destruction.

Peter Vahlefeld was born in 1967, in Tokyo, Japan. He graduated from the Parsons School of Design, New York. He has participated in many solo exhibitions and art fairs like art Karlsruhe in Germany on a regular basis or at auctions such as Sotheby’s in Vienna and Neumeister, Munich. Peter Vahlefeld currently lives and works in Berlin.
