PRECARIOUS
Marcial Pontillas’ Trenchant observations of the foibles of his ordinary countrymen standout as the theme unifying brilliant career as painter in the last 15th years. Although his Precarious reveals his respect for the most attended religious fiesta of his country, the feast of the Black Nazarene, patron of Quiapo district of manila, Pontillas evidently chose to comment on the recklessness of some guests of the fiesta. The group whom Pontillas painted in the foreground, evidently more of curiosities instead of true devotees, have chosen the skeletal scaffolding as a billboard lodged dangerously on the top of a building as their viewing deck of the procession. Yet this perch could crash down because of their weight, such that they could be the breaking news tomorrow as the victim of a disaster during the holy event. And of that is the case, their fate could be the result of their lack of faith, in contrast to the fervor of the devotees whom the artist captures ant-size, and like ants, diligently escort the true star of the day. Pontillas characteristically fills his painting with a myriad of details that he painstakingly recorded, because such is Pontillas, the artist, the master observer of the necessary details.

Marcial Pontillas was born and raised in the Philippines, and moved to Guam in 2011. He is a former Fine Arts College Professor at the Far Eastern University in Manila from 2000 to 2010 and a multi-award winning artist, he had different art exhibitions local and international. Marcial is a contemporary neo-expressionist and a conceptual artist who continues to explore the human spirit with the claustrophobic humanscapes as its metaphor. Aside from paintings, Marcial makes sculptures, installation, prints, graphics and video art. His works reflect his sensitivity towards the urban life's seemingly suffocating existence. In the traffic congestion of human bodies and machines, the "Worst" of our species seems to manifest and fester. However, is this chaos a part of the cycles of transcendence, our search for "Worth".
