Karen Rieger is a contemporary Canadian painter whose artistry revolves around the transformative power of color, evoking mood, sensuality, and a profound sense of beauty. Embracing a flatness of color to emphasize formal qualities rather than creating illusions of reality, Rieger's works are rich tapestries woven from diverse inspirations spanning avant-garde movements, European textile patterns, and elements drawn from her immediate surroundings.

In her artistic process, Rieger engages in a dialogue between her imagination and the past, allowing the painting to reveal itself intuitively as brush meets canvas. Forgoing preparatory sketches, she finds excitement and spontaneity in the act of creation, infusing her works with a sense of vitality and dynamism.

Faces in Rieger's paintings are rendered from her imagination, with features generalized to evoke universality rather than individuality. Similarly, her still life compositions may be inspired by a simple bouquet or emerge organically onto the canvas, lush and fully formed.

Drawing from her childhood experiences, Rieger's landscape series transports viewers to both countryside and urban backyards, filtered through her imagination and emotional response. Memories of summers spent exploring the Ontario countryside enrich her internal visual archive, capturing fleeting glimpses of ever-changing vistas viewed from car windows and the dappled light of forest walks.

Rieger's technique involves layering impasto strokes of acrylic upon watercolor-like underglazes, occasionally revealing charcoal marks from initial drawings. Through her paintings, she captures the energetic essence of landscapes, infused with a passion for the natural world instilled in her from childhood—a world imbued with magic and ethereal qualities that continue to resonate strongly within her artistic expression.
