This mixed media painting shows Main Street of Placerville, California, in 1850. I saw the reference photo in the waiting room at my dentist’s office, and was so taken with it that I asked his permission to paint it.The top half of the painting, the sky, hill, and forest in the distance are all oil. The details in the foreground are mostly pencil, pen, and ink. I felt that the oil painting was more permanent, more powerful, while the men and the buildings look fragile and temporary.

The group of men on the right are distributing white flags marking property boundaries in the city. At the top of the hill is some sort of water delivery system. It looks too small to be a flume; perhaps it is a stone trough. It must be the source of Hangtown Creek, which still runs downhill to Main Street.

I couldn’t see from the photo what flag was flying from the flagpole on the right, so I made it the California Bear Flag. The reference photo is in the Larsen Museum. No wagon ruts mar the street, but there are two horses, one on the near left and another in the distance.

The central image extends to the edges, but it could have a simple dark wooden frame, about two inches wide.

In my work, I'm looking for that place where work and play are one, where spirit and matter meet.

I have taught at Texas Tech, Amarillo College, Laney College in downtown Oakland, California, at UC Berkeley, and at the College of the Virgin Islands. At Laney, where I taught for forty years, I studied art with Bill Snider, who used the techniques of the Dutch masters to paint Disney characters.

Retirement has given me time to paint in earnest, and to explore different types of paintings. In September, 2013, Artmajeur honored me with a Silver Award.

After forty years in the San Francisco Bay Area, my family and I have moved to the foothills of the Sierras, and retirement has given me a chance to paint in earnest, to make painting part of every day. I've explored landscapes, news, portraits and figures, sports animals, surrealism.

Art is a way to learn about the world, about yourself and your experiences, the way you see and feel life, what you value. Welcome to my galleries! I hope you find some things to enjoy.
