Henri Fantin-Latour was a French painter and lithographer who lived from January 14, 1836, to August 25, 1904. He is best known for his paintings of flowers and group portraits of Parisian artists and writers.
He was born in Grenoble, Isère, and his full name was Ignace Henri Jean Théodore Fantin-Latour. He learned how to draw from his artist father when he was young. In 1850, he went to Paris to study at the Ecole de Dessin with Lecoq de Boisbaudran. After he finished school at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1854, he spent a lot of time at the Musée du Louvre copying the works of the old masters. Even though Fantin-Latour was friends with young artists like Whistler and Manet, who would later be known for Impressionism, Fantin's own style stayed traditional.
Whistler made Fantin famous in England, where his still-lifes sold so well that they were "practically unknown in France during his lifetime." Fantin-Latour also made imaginative lithographs that were inspired by the music of some of the best classical composers. In 1876, Fantin-Latour went to Bayreuth to see a performance of the Ring cycle, which moved him a lot. Later, he published lithographs in La revue wagnérienne that were inspired by Richard Wagner. This helped him build his reputation as an anti-naturalist painter among the Parisian avant-garde.
Henri Fantin-Latour married another painter, Victoria Dubourg, in 1875. After that, he spent his summers on the country estate of his wife's family in Buré, Orne, Lower Normandy, where he died on August 25, 1904.
He was buried in Paris, France, at the Cimetière du Montparnasse.
