GUILLERMO ALTADILL. sailor-artist
Guillermo was born in Barcelona in 1962; his life and career have revolved around his passion for sailing, regattas and the ocean. He has competed in ten Around the World Races, including the Whitbread, the Volvo Ocean Race, the Jules Verne Trophy and the Barcelona World Race. In total he has sailed more than 450,000 nautical miles in regatta, as well as participating in Olympic and Americas Cup teams. Guillermo inherited his passion for art from his father; himself a skilled sculptor and painter as well as a very keen yachtsman and boatbuilder.
Guillermo uses recycled sails to create his works of art. He has shared many nautical miles with each piece of sail cloth used, they have all been carefully chosen as witnesses to his own personal journey. Each canvas is therefore a unique testament to Guillermos vast experience.
His work acquires further depth when one considers the variety of materials used, from classic cottons and dacrons to modern carbon membranes and kevlar. This representation of the progression and diversity in sailmaking techniques is reflected in the values of Ratsey and Lapthorn, a company whose roots are in the past but whose whose future is based on modern technolgy.
Guillermo canvases are a combination of science, art and tradition, imbued with the colors of the ocean, and immense skies. They transmit, heat , cold , intense blues contrast with menacing greys. Each one combines forms, materials and personal history in a unique and truthful representation of Guillermos experience and artistic expression.
