I want to create something that looked a bit like the actual diffraction pattern of spectral colors you see, but not quite. I want to celebrate the elegance of diffraction: There should be a tantalizing hint at the beauty of the underlying mathematics, but only in a subtle way.

Digital art inspired by and based on physics. Diffraction patterns are mounted on cylindrical screens, emanating from two imaginary diffraction gratings, positioned back-to-back in the center.
These structures embody a cross-over of what you see with your eyes - colors and peaks of different intensity - and what exact mathematical calculations yield: diffraction curves for gratings with a few slits, weighted according to the intensity of the blackbody radiation of the sun.
The Atoll of Diffraction is floating in a no man's sea between science and art. It is built from plain lines without thickness or depth on purpose, evoking memories of sober scientific illustrations. Yet, these innocuous lines cause chaos and induce impossible shadows, patterns, artefacts.
Two twisted ribbons, flapping and flopping along semi-circles, are glued together to form a virtual coral atoll. Voyagers are orbiting the atoll, flying above it, diving underneath it. They recognize foreign worlds.

Unfortunately, Artmajeur does not allow for uploading images larger than 25MB. So, I had to select a few images and also decrease them in resolution, from 9000pixels wide to 7200 pixels.

Diffraction patterns: Intensity versus wavelength generated by a diffraction grating of a few slits, for a range of spectral colors. The color of each line represents the exact wavelength of light that generates this diffraction pattern. Weighted by the intensity of blackbody radiation, the temperature being a bit lower than that of the sun. Somewhat realistic parameters of the grating, like the distance of the slits being a few thousand nanometers, and the width of the slit being a few hundred nanometers. Digital art generated by custom code.
