Artist's Statement
Painting for me is a way to express thoughts, emotions and mood. Each piece is a visual expression of an emotion or mood at a particular moment in time. I aim to create work which illicits a strong reaction. It is this response, whether positive or negative, which is important to me as I feel a painting should provoke an emotive response.
My earlier paintings were representational depictions of people, places and nature. While I still love portraiture and painting from life, I have found that as I continue to paint I am movings towards non-representational, more expressive work.
I build the paint in layers, often stripping back layers to create texture and shape. I like to combine media such as acrylics and oils, or watercolour and pastel. The tools I use depend on the painting but generally I use brushes, palette knives and my fingers.
