This photo was taken by photographer Ekaterina Kastalskaya on March 4, 2024 on Kodak Gold ISO 200 color film in Zaryadye Park in Moscow.

In the photo we can see the Znamensky Cathedral, an Orthodox church in Kitay-gorod in Moscow, formerly the Cathedral of the Znamensky Monastery.

The Znamensky Monastery was founded in 1631 on the site of the Romanov estate. In 1668 there was a fire in which the monastery churches burned down. The monks appealed to the tsar for help.

Boyar Ivan Mikhailovich Miloslavsky paid for the construction of a new cathedral, and the tsar allocated money to cover it. The new cathedral began to be built in 1679 on the place of the church of Athanasius of Athos. The architects F. Grigoriev and G. Anisimov worked on it in a style retrospective for that time, when preference was given to styles with details from the architecture of Western Europe - the Moscow Baroque.

In 1683 Miloslavsky died without finishing the construction of the cathedral, and by the tsar's decree Vladimir Odoevsky took over the financing. The construction was finished in 1684, but the cathedral looked unfinished.
At the end of the XVIII century a new period of prosperity of the monastery began. The cathedral was painted, its walls were decorated with stucco.

The monastery was badly damaged in the fire of 1812.
By the 300th anniversary of the House of Romanov in 1913 the cathedral was restored.

In 1923 the monastery was closed, and its premises were used for communal housing, warehouses and offices.
As a result of gradual restoration of the preserved buildings of the monastery in 1960-1973, the original appearance of the Znamensky Cathedral and the Brotherhood Building, the bell tower with cells was largely restored.

Since 1992, worship services were resumed in the Znamensky Cathedral. In 2015, a roof was built over the staircase to the upper church. In 2016, the cathedral was restored and painted red with white details.

Ekaterina began photographing as a teenager at the age of 14. And of course, it was analog photography. Shooting on a Zenith, playing with exposure, developing and hand printing.

In the 2000's came the era of digital photography, and from the middle of the decade Ekaterina began to engage in reportage photography.
In 2016, she returned to analog photography again.

Now in her work she explores association as a way to connect pictures of the surrounding reality with sensory experience. Her photographs reference books she has read, movies she has watched, music videos, works of art, and simple stories that happen in everyone's life.

The genre of portraiture attracts her with its ability to show the human gaze and real emotion, be it joy, peace, tension, dramatic strife in the soul.

Ekaterina prefers to capture the moment when shooting and takes a film camera even on a simple walk in the park.
