Christophe Bregnard aime aussi travailler le bois. En
2015, il crée Fractal Wood, dont la forme est inspirée
par un ancien globe de lampe chiné en brocante.
Ayant perdu sa fonction initiale, l’objet fortement
agrandi devient de l’art pur, sans autre fonction
que de susciter le rêve. L’illustre Nuit étoilée (2017)
une version de Fractal Wood qui est entièrement
recouverte de pampilles en cristal noir.
Réalisée expressément pour l’exposition au POPA,
la sculpture When the night falls s’inspire d’un
détail emprunté à Fractal Wood. L’artiste voulait
une pièce plus grande, à échelle humaine. D’un
côté de l’œuvre, les formes galbées offrent un
paysage qui pourrait être un désert de dunes
aux courbes sensuelles, à moins que ce ne soit
la maquette d’un relief dont les strates dessinent
des motifs circulaires. Quant au dos de la pièce, il
est recouvert de feuilles d’or. Vu son raffinement,
cette paroi dorée pourrait d'ailleurs constitué la
face avant de l’œuvre. En jouant sur la beauté et
l’intérêt des deux faces de la sculpture, l’artiste
invite le spectateur à tourner autour de l’œuvre,
rappelant innocemment, le sens d’un terme
technique quelque peu oublié : la ronde-bosse
Christophe Bregnard is a contemporary Swiss artist. Attracted as much by the recovery of objects (wheel rims, steam baskets, wedding globes) as by contemporary materials (resin, lacquer, polystyrene), the artist is primarily interested in the questions raised by the work. Some of his sculptures evoke plausible three-dimensional objects such as a wine barrel, or an old bulb, while others do not use any known vocabulary.
Nature plays an essential role in Bregnard approach. It offers him a meditative setting from which he draws his inspiration and sometimes even the raw material of his creations (peacock feathers, blue thistles, wood mushrooms). Cut, sanded, caressed, the slats of wood submit to the artist's requirements and become, under his hands, the imprint left by a flower, a giant halo or a desert.
Christophe Bregnard has exhibited all across Europe and won the Lachat Prize for Visual Arts in 2018. Numerous key galleries and museums such as Laurent Marthaler Contemporary have featured Christophe Bregnard's work in the past.
