This series is based on 'Les Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry’, the most famous and possibly the best surviving example of manuscript illumination in the late phase of the International Gothic style.
It is a book of hours: a collection of prayers to be said at the canonical hours. It was created between 1412 and 1416 for the extravagant royal bibliophile John I, Duke of Berry by Paul, Jan and Herman van Limburg (Nijmegen, the Netherlands)
When the three painters and their patron died in 1416, possibly victims of plague, the manuscript was left unfinished.

This painting is dedicated to our native city of Nijmegen, the Netherlands

Antonius Willems, born in 1954, is a Dutch artist who specializes in sculpture and painting. He graduated from the Royal Netherlands Academy of Art and Design. Willems' artwork can be found in private and public collections across various countries, including Germany, France, the Netherlands, the United States, and Japan.

In his artistic practice, Willems seamlessly blends painting and sculpture to create sculptures, installations, and paintings. His works are characterized by vibrant colors and their spatial dynamics. Rather than following art trends, Willems focuses on concept-based creations that engage with the spirit of the times, often accompanied by ironic visual commentary.

While his artworks are abstract in nature, they frequently derive inspiration from and evoke emotions associated with the natural world. The artist's paintings exude a serene and reflective atmosphere, akin to the works of Giorgio Morandi, whom he greatly admired.

Antonius Willems lives and works in France, where he continues to explore and expand his artistic vision.
