The first three paintings from the 'I AM' series. This series consists of fifteen children's portraits. Each painting is based on a contemporary photo, placing children from different countries in a colourful world that contrasts sharply with reality. Each portrait symbolizes one of the rights of the child.

The first three portraits are about three young girls. All three are set against a colourful flowery background. At first glance, they look like brightly coloured paintings, where each girl looks at you with an uninhibited and innocent look.

"Indigo Daisy" is a child soldier from Liberia. She stands in a meadow of wild daisies. The blue flower garland on her head should draw the viewer's attention, not the gun she's holding in her hand. Every child has the right to protection in times of war, but that does not mean that you should give every child a gun to protect themselves against the violence of war.

Andra Daans is a Dutch artist based in France, celebrated for her emotionally charged paintings that vividly explore the resilience of the human spirit through compelling storytelling. Her work is deeply influenced by her Dutch-Surinamese heritage, often focusing on the experiences of children and using techniques such as grisaille and raw umber washes to craft powerful narratives. Daans' subjects are typically portrayed in shades of gray or warm, earthy tones, frequently set against vibrant backgrounds or seamlessly integrated into their surroundings, highlighting broader themes of identity, culture, and shared humanity.

Daans' art engages with historical and societal issues, giving voice to those who are often overlooked. Her series on figures like Joseph Boulogne and Ota Benga are striking examples of her ability to weave personal and collective histories into her work. Additionally, her exploration of African patterns and symbols, inspired by her own family heritage, adds cultural depth to her pieces.

Recognized as an Akoun-certified artist, Andra Daans has exhibited her work internationally, with her pieces held in private collections worldwide, including that of notable collector Ed Gordon. Through her art, Daans invites viewers to deeply engage with the stories she tells, fostering empathy and a greater understanding of our interconnectedness.
