"Alex Claude creates imaginary landscapes using acrylic paint on medium. Full of gestures, the ample, broad, lively and rapid touch fully evokes the expressionist movement. The choice of colors, however, excludes the stridency usually associated with this movement: they are in fact collected in ranges of black and gray tones, slightly bistre or bluish, like tonalist paintings, such as those by Whistler. The result is rather serene and contemplative atmospheres. Far from any realistic approach, these landscapes are reduced to their leading lines and their main masses. They are sometimes simplified to the limits of abstraction. The transparency of the material reveals the succession of layers of application, suggesting space and depth. The result of all this is that these landscapes seem to have emerged little by little from the limbo of memory.
