At first sight, this may just seem a graceful portrait of a black woman on a swing. But this painting is an ode to the diverse, historical voices whose stories have been forgotten, and particularly, those of female figures. This image draws inspiration from the rich historic black art and brings life to the unspoken and undocumented narratives of women like her.

A black girl takes center stage amidst the lush embrace of a forest. Her identity shrouded in anonymity and her age unknown, she sways upon the swing, lost in a moment of contemplation.

The absence of shoes suggests a life devoid of privilege, while the lush vegetation whispers tales of both serenity and struggle, both abundance and adversity. As we observe her, the thought occurs to us - could she stem from a plantation's somber history? The lushness of the surroundings casts that shadow of doubt and reminds us of the untold stories of countless lives whose realities were harsh and unforgiving.

The artwork's mysterious aura invites us to go deeper and explore her story. She navigates the complexities of her world, her past, and her dreams within the forest's embrace, as a sanctuary for contemplation. It is an open-ended narrative that inspires empathy and reflection.

As an artist working across multiple mediums, including oil, watercolor, acrylics, and textiles, Afke's work is rooted in exploring the emotional aspects of diversity and exclusion, abandonment and inclusion, loneliness and connection.

Through her paintings, she seeks to capture the raw emotions that arise from these themes, inviting the viewer to contemplate their own experiences and feelings. Whether working with the fluidity of watercolors or the boldness of acrylics, Afke strives to create pieces that are both striking and thought-provoking.

In her textile work, she is particularly drawn to the tactile nature of the medium and the meditative state that arises from working with fabric. She uses fabric and thread to explore the ways in which she connects with others, and the world at large. By stitching together fragments of cloth, she creates a visual representation of the interconnectedness of all things.

Her work is deeply personal, yet it is also universal. It speaks to the human experience and the emotions that we all share. Through her art, she hopes to create a space for reflection and connection, where viewers can explore their own feelings of exclusion, loneliness, and abandonment, and find comfort and understanding in the shared experiences to gain feelings of inclusion and connection.
