Origins and History

Symbolism artworks emerged in the late 19th century as a response to the industrialization and rationalization of society. The movement was characterized by a focus on the imagination, emotions, and spirituality, often expressed through dreamlike or fantastical imagery. Key figures include Gustave Moreau, Odilon Redon, and Edvard Munch.

  2. "The Persistence of Memory" by Salvador Dali, created in 1931, is a surrealistic masterpiece that explores the concept of time. The artwork features melting clocks, a distorted landscape, and a strange creature with a distorted face.

  3. "The Scream" by Edvard Munch, created in 1893, is a haunting Symbolism artwork that captures the essence of human despair. The artwork features a figure with a distorted face, screaming in agony against a red and orange sky.

  4. "The Son of Man" by Rene Magritte, created in 1964, is a Symbolism artwork that explores the concept of identity. The artwork features a man with his face obscured by a green apple, leaving the viewer to question who he really is.
