The oil painting "Harbor at the Foot of the Hills" captures a peaceful coastal scene where the gentle rhythm of the sea meets the rugged beauty of the land. With masterful brushstrokes and a harmonious color palette, the artist brings to life the serene atmosphere of a quiet harbor nestled beneath rolling hills. At the forefront of the composition, a weathered wooden boat rests on the rocky shoreline, its bow gently touching the calm, crystal-clear water. The muted browns and earthy tones of the boat contrast with the shimmering blues and greens of the sea, creating a striking visual balance. Nearby, a small wooden dock extends into the water, its planks worn and slightly uneven, suggesting years of use by fishermen and sailors. The water is rendered in a mesmerizing array of blues, greens, and translucent tones, reflecting the sky above while revealing the rocky seabed below. The artist’s use of loose yet deliberate brushstrokes conveys the gentle movement of the tide, with ripples forming around the anchored boats. Sunlight dances on the water's surface, creating a play of light and shadow that adds depth and realism to the scene. Further into the harbor, several sailboats and fishing vessels float peacefully, their masts reaching toward the sky. The reflections of the boats ripple subtly in the water, blending seamlessly with the surrounding hues. Red and orange buoys add a touch of vibrancy, guiding the viewer’s eye toward the distant shoreline. Beyond the water, the coastline gently curves, leading to a hill rising above the harbor. The hillside is painted in warm earth tones, with patches of green vegetation clinging to its slopes. Atop the hill, a small white house with a green roof sits in solitude, its position overlooking the bay suggesting a quiet retreat, far from the bustle of city life. Above, the sky stretches endlessly, a mixture of soft blues and wispy white clouds that drift lazily across the canvas. A flock of seagulls soars overhead, their wings catching the light as they glide effortlessly through the open air. Their presence adds movement to the otherwise tranquil setting, reinforcing the sense of freedom and boundlessness that the sea embodies. It is a reminder that, at the foot of the hills, where the sea meets the shore, life flows at its own gentle pace, offering a sanctuary of calm and endless inspiration.

Yuriy Suprunchuk is a Ukrainian painter, born on April 11, 1961, in Zhytomyr, Ukraine. He received his formal art education at the Zheleznogorsk Art School (Russia), graduating in 1982, where he studied under V. Chukuev and E. Nikulin. In 2002, he became a member of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine.
His artistic journey began in early childhood, when a moment of watching his mother paint sparked a deep fascination with art. Suprunchuk recalls how, as a small child, he once stayed up all night painting after being inspired by the scene of his mother working on a composition.
He later studied at the Kharkiv State Pedagogical Institute, where he not only refined his technical skills but also acquired deep theoretical knowledge and art teaching methodology. Under the mentorship of distinguished professors, he developed a strong foundation in both classical and contemporary Ukrainian art traditions. As a student and later as an educator himself, he placed a high emphasis on nurturing the individual talent and expression of his pupils.
Yurii Suprunchuk’s creative style blends realism with elements of romanticism and fantasy, often inspired by Ukrainian folklore, landscapes, and national cultural identity. His compositions are notable for their philosophical undercurrents and metaphysical dimensions. In his works, one can often find abstracted objects, symbolic figures, and stylized interpretations of natural forms.
His paintings are characterized by rhythmic compositions, balanced use of light, and expressive color schemes. He often explores existential themes and the metaphysical presence of the human spirit.
Suprunchuk’s creative approach is introspective and emotional, yet rooted in structured form. His works frequently portray female figures, domestic still lifes, Ukrainian village landscapes, and cultural archetypes. The recurrence of motifs like trees, fish, vessels, and abstract elements imbues his paintings with layered meaning, often inviting the viewer to contemplate deeper symbolic narratives.
In addition to his artistic practice, Yurii Suprunchuk has taught for many years, inspiring a new generation of artists in Zhytomyr. His students and colleagues recognize him not only for his exceptional talent, but also for his philosophical depth and dedication to the craft.
Today, his works are held in private collections and exhibitions, continuing to speak through color, form, and inner vision — a testament to the enduring power of Ukrainian painting.
