The composition arranges two faces in profile, deliberately using contrasting color palettes—cool blues and purples for one figure, warm oranges and reds for the other. This color division wasn't just aesthetic; it represents fundamental energies that exist within all of us: logic and emotion, restraint and passion, past and future.
The central vertical division was particularly important to me. It creates both separation and connection simultaneously—a visual representation of how relationships exist in this paradoxical state.
Each face contains fragments of the other's color palette, suggesting that even in our differences, we contain elements of those we connect with. I deliberately avoided making either figure distinctly gendered, as I wanted to explore connection beyond conventional categories.
The geometric fragmentation allowed me to break down facial features into their essential planes while maintaining recognizable humanity. I worked through dozens of sketches to find precisely the right angles that would convey emotion through purely geometric means.
What I ultimately wanted to convey was that meaningful connection doesn't require sameness—in fact, it thrives in the space between differences. The painting invites viewers to consider how we construct ourselves in relation to others, and how every significant relationship becomes a geometric puzzle of complementary and contrasting elements that somehow find a way to align.
