To “paint” with light usually requires a long exposure with a stationary camera and a handheld light source in motion. This series of monochrome light paintings were created in a less conventional manner, using a moving camera as a brush and a common reflective stationary household item as the paint, during a 4-8 second exposure. Each captured image is unique and ranges from moderate to complex in its composition.

My endeavor in this series is the same as Rene Magritte’s, to transform “the familiar to the strange”. And in so doing, to create truly non-representational abstracts using real world objects. My hope is that it will inspire others to be less conventional and more innovative.

W. Patrick O’Brien was born and raised in Houston, Texas. After his parents gifted him with a Kodak Hawkeye camera on his 10th birthday, Patrick developed a fascination with viewing the world through the window of a camera viewfinder. However, it was his love of music that introduced him to album cover graphics, especially with the psychedelic art of that time, which changed how he looked at graphic content.  After graduating with a degree in Multimedia, Patrick has worked as a darkroom technician, commercial photographer, and retired after 24 years as an audio/video producer and forensic investigator. The motivation for his images and the desire to create them is a philosophy he shares with one of his greater influences, the surrealist Rene Magritte, whose motive was to "restore the familiar to the strange."
