This is a drawing on sand plaster, made with black and white pencil crayon. Sand plaster is not an easy surface for drawing. The crayon wears down, settles into crevices, and refuses to be controlled like it would on paper.

But that was the interesting part—this surface didn’t allow for precision, so there was no choice but to focus on the most essential lines. There was no Ctrl + Z here.

What emerged is neither a sketch nor a full painting. It is the trace of a hand’s movement on a surface that was never meant to be a canvas.

I was scraping off layers of paint, one by one, until I uncovered something that transported me back in time.

At that moment, I was working in the Art Conservation Studio, revealing paintings on the walls of a medieval building. Following designated sections, I scraped off layers of paint, uncovering works from different periods of art history.

Strangely, the youngest layers turned out to be the most faded. Week by week, I uncovered deeper and older ones. Eventually, I reached the oldest layer, dating back to the medieval period. It turned out that its colors were so vivid and fresh that they seemed to defy the passage of time! They proved the durability of color achieved through historical painting techniques.

Today, as I prepare paints for my own paintings, I create each one myself in my studio, using traditional European recipes inspired by medieval art traditions. Such paints and pigments guarantee me the durability of colors thanks to these time-tested methods.

What’s more, the owner decided to uncover and preserve the medieval murals, which had stood the test of time. And just as an aside, today in that very place stands an exclusive hotel, visited by heads of state – a reminder of the timeless value of art and its place in the most prestigious settings.
