Good Friday – A Rabbi’s Arrival in Exile
Acrylic on canvas, 50 × 40 cm
This painting was created on the eve of Christmas 2023, against the backdrop of the renewed Palestinian-Israeli conflict. It depicts a Jewish rabbi carrying a small child in his arms while pushing a stroller filled with kosher gifts. The two figures have just arrived in New York — on foreign soil, at the edge of winter, under holiday lights.
In the background, the hotel “Paradis” glows with pre-Christmas decoration, contrasting the weight of exile with the shine of celebration. The work is both personal and historical, echoing the artist’s own reflections on displacement, as well as childhood memories of his grandfather, who was captured near Ukraine in 1941 and imprisoned in the Baranovichi camp.

Vendredi Saint – L’arrivée d’un rabbin en exil

Cette œuvre a été peinte à la veille de Noël 2023, sur fond du conflit israélo-palestinien ravivé. Elle représente un rabbin juif portant un petit enfant dans ses bras, poussant une poussette remplie de cadeaux casher. Ils viennent d’arriver à New York — en terre étrangère, à la veille de l’hiver, sous les lumières d’une ville festive.
À l’arrière-plan, l’hôtel “Paradis” brille d’illuminations de Noël, opposant l’exil douloureux à l’éclat de la fête. L’œuvre est à la fois personnelle et historique, écho aux souvenirs d’enfance de l’artiste et aux récits de son grand-père, capturé en 1941 près de l’Ukraine et déporté au camp de Baranovitchi.

I work without outlines, without charcoal, without classical plans. My process begins directly on the canvas — through motion, intuition, and internal vision.
