"A Cage of My Own Making" is a mixed-media artwork, hand-carved from MDF, which gives it a graffiti-like form and departs from the traditional constraints of canvas. "A Cage of My Own Making" is a mixed-media artwork, hand-carved from MDF, which gives it a graffiti-like form and departs from the traditional constraints of canvas. At the center of the painting is a portrait of a woman entangled in her own hair - both physically and symbolically.
In my culture, women are often told that to cut off their hair is to lose their beauty, their femininity, their wisdom. Gender stereotypes passed down from generation to generation can become invisible chains that limit self-expression, creativity, and personal growth. In this paper, I explore how such narratives constrain women, shaping their identities in ways that hinder rather than empower. Tangled hair becomes a metaphor for these constraints - something that should define beauty and tradition, but instead becomes a cage of its own making.
