L'affresco è una tecnica pittorica che consiste nell'usare pigmenti stemperati in acqua, su un supporto costituito da intonaco ancora "fresco", ossia dove l'idrato di calcio che costituisce il legante, non è ancora carbonato. Per questo motivo, il metodo tradizionale del Buon Fresco comporta la scelta operativa di iniziare e terminare la stesura dei pigmenti in un intervallo di tempo definito e limitato, per assicurare alle opere peculiari qualità estetiche e di resistenza.

Fresco is a technique of mural painting in which pigments dispersed in water are painted on a freshly laid lime plaster, where the hydrated lime that serves as binder has not yet changed chemically. The traditional method of Buon Fresco means that the artist must finish his work while the plaster is still moist.
