Sakura Yamaguchi employs a refined technical approach that enhances the minimalist depth of the piece. The golden background imbues the composition with a sense of reverence; the use of gold suggests timelessness and continuity, elevating the figure of the cat to a symbolic, almost sacred presence emerging from a realm that transcends the ordinary.
The cat’s outline is sharp yet restrained, evoking a photographic negative where fullness and life are distilled into a subtle suggestion. The soft, faded blue that fills the form brings an element of visual quiet, as though the cat exists only as a memory or an ephemeral thought. This cool blue, set against the warmth of the gold background, creates a delicate tension—a dialogue between the material and the immaterial, the tangible and the imagined. Yamaguchi’s technique lends the cat an ethereal quality, transforming it from a mere physical form into an idea that hovers at the edge of perception, inviting the viewer into a personal meditation on presence and elusiveness

Born in 1967, Sakura Yamaguchi is a self-taught graphic designer and a key figure in the Catopia collective. Deeply influenced by his practice of Iaidō, a Japanese martial art rooted in precision and discipline, Yamaguchi approaches his art with a meditative rigor that centers around the figure of the cat as a symbol of grace, mystery and the endless pursuit of perfection. Inspired by Leonardo da Vinci's observation that “even the worst cat is a masterpiece,” Yamaguchi's monotype prints combine elements of surrealism and expressionism to capture the elusive elegance of cats. Working on handmade or linen paper, his works - such as Blood of Silence - invite viewers into a contemplative space where each print embodies the tension between flaw and beauty, permanence and impermanence. Through the uniqueness of the monotype technique, Yamaguchi's art becomes a meditation on the transient nature of life and the quiet beauty found in imperfection.
