Sculpter and Painter Rodrigo Guillén was born on September 4, 1961 in Havana, Cuba. With a congenital love for Art, he drew his first scribbles at the age of 4. Always slanting for Drawing and Crafts, at the age of 8, he would copy to perfection the old front covers of magazines (Revista Bohemia). Even though his upbringing was autodidactic, he took several courses at the San Alejandro Visual Art School in Havana.

At the end of four university years he graduated in Graphic Design in Computers. In 1987, he engaged in Visual Art workshops in Old Havana, taking courses in Sculpture, Painting, Ceramic and Silk-Screen Print. That same year, he joined ACAA (Cuban Association of Artists and Crafters) becoming an independent artist, and marketing his own work throughout different cities in the island.

In 1989, he joined the BFC (Cultural Heritage Funds) in association with several groups of Cuban visual artists, collaborating in collective exhibitions as well as personal ones. For two years, he was an Art instructor for children in Casa de la Cultura (Community Cultural Art Center) at Old Havana.

In Cuba, he made more than one thousand sculptures, mainly in wood of different kinds, that are part of businesses and public places as well as part of private collections in that country.

Guillén arrived in The United States, in February of 1998, being a resident of Miami ever since. He was invited inmmediately to participate in the World Expo in Miami Beach, and since then, he has gained recognition among the Cuban artists in Exile. Since 1999, his work is exhibited in different Gallery Halls in the cities of Miami and Coral Gables. Some of his works are already part of private collections in the Magic City.

This young artist has obtained recognition for his artistic work (Sculpture and Painting), and for his collaboration in favor of the community; recognition given not only by the press, but also in Tertulias (artistic and cultural gatherings), Literary groups, and cultural organizations in this Miami an city.

Robert Calluso, in the publication, “Contemporary Artists Dictionary” (Edition 3 – 2001) describes Rodrigo Guillen as an artist of “...unmistakable style. Using human figures and different materials for his compositions, he has been able to create a surrealistic style of his own.” And Calluso continues, “...He does not disdain upon the pure form or simple abstractions but to the contrary, Rodrigo has been able to accomplish through his works fascinating examples of his creativity while never compromising its beauty.”

Angela Di Bello, Director of Agora Gallery and Editor of ArtisSpectrum Magazine, from the old and legendary Art district of Soho, in Chelsea, New York, invited him to exhibit his paintings, and talks about Guillen’s work, “his work is influenced by Cubism, exhibits strength, in/and, explore structured elements of space and form. Half human, half mechanical instruments of futuristic existence, the paintings resonate in a world that is filled with lyricism, paradox, and mystery. Wonderful work!... I feel that his work is marketable and in keeping with the style and quality of work that we have success representing and exhibiting at Agora Gallery.”

Rodrigo Guillen’s paintings and sculptures, preserve that mystery that seduces us. They reflect at once, a simple and humble soul as well as a deep onel, without resting in the creating process; quiet and with a sensibility not ever imaginable.
