Inspired by the tenor aria "Vesti la giubba" from 1892 Ruggero Leoncavallo's opera “Pagliacci”, this work seeks to translate the dichotomy between joy and sadness, pain and love, as in excerpts from the opera's lyrics that say:
“Vesti la giubba e la faccia infarina
La gente paga e rider vuole qua(...)
Ridi, pagliaccio, sul tuo amore infranto
Ridi del duol che t'avvelena il cuore!”
(Put on your costume and paint your face
People pay, and they want to laugh
Laugh, clown, over your broken love
Laugh at the pain that poisons your heart!)
As a reference, the transfigured sadness of the iconic costumed and made-up clown, by American artist Emmett Leo Kelly and his character "Weary Willie", is expressed on the canvas in countless colors and fluid expressionist technique in an authorial style by Pelissari.

Rafael R. Pelissari is a poet, musician, plastic artist and bookmaker. Born in São Paulo - Brazil, Rafael has a degree in electrical engineering from Mackenzie Presbyterian University. From a very young age, he always showed interest in different types of art.
In the visual arts, Rafael has always sought improvisation, "action painting", art that flows directly and without necessarily relying on sketches and execution planning. As an adherent of the concept originating from the great Indian philosophies, "Samadhi", tuned silence, painting almost as a kind of meditation, a concept also widely applied in the origins of "Shuimohua" (水墨畫), a Chinese painting technique that is most widespread in the West for its Japanese version, Sumi-ê.
Over the years, Rafael developed his own style of artistic expression moving through different forms of expression having delved into woodcuts, woodcut printings, paintings with acrylic paint, charcoal and pastel on the most varied supports - canvas, paper, wall, fabric, etc.
He currently resides in São Paulo where he produces all his art work in his private studio.
