Lilith (Hebrew. לילית) is the first wife of Adam in the Kabbalistic theory. Mentioned in some early apocryphal stories of the Christianity which are not included in the biblical Canon. In the Hebrew text of Isaiah, which tells of the desolation of the Edomites after Divine judgment (ISA. 34:14), predicted the appearance of night Ghost (lilith). Mentioned in the Dead sea Scrolls, the Alphabet of Ben-Sira, the Zohar.

According to legend, after leaving Adam, Lilith became an evil demon, killing babies (this character is present in Arab mythology). In the mythology of Ancient Mesopotamia, like the name of a night demon that kills children and makes fun of a sleeping man (also mentioned men "Lila").

The name Lilith is found in the Epic of Gilgamesh in the second Millennium BC.
In Semitic languages, particularly in Hebrew, this word is a feminine adjective "night" (for example, Hebrew. דממה לילית — "dmama Lalit" — the silence of the night).

In addition, in Hebrew (and possibly in other Semitic languages) the word "Lilith" is referred to the bird owl, a variety of owls. Most likely, that is why Lilith is sometimes depicted with an owl.

There is also a view that the name comes from the Sumerian "Lil" (air, wind; spirit, Ghost).

Possibly true, all points of view. Vladimir Yemelyanov in the Preface to "Assyrian magic," Charles Fosse writes the following: "a boy and a girl-Lilith — demons, in the name which is a play of words from different languages. Sumarski Lille means "air, wind; spirit, Ghost" in the Akkadian Lilu — "the night". Hence the mixture of ideas: the demons of this kind thought of the night ghosts. Most likely, they can be matched with the Slavic salonami the dead — that is, with people dying an unnatural death early. In any case, they always differ from Gadim — ordinary spirits of the dead ancestors (although for the latter a characteristic unusual deaths). Legends about the origin of Lilith[edit | edit wiki text]

According to the Alphabet of Ben-Sira, Adam's first wife was Lilith.[4] She did not wish to obey her husband, as viewed himself as a creation of God Jehovah's[6] like Adam.

Uttering the secret name of God, Yahweh, Lilith rose into the air and flew away from Adam. Then Adam turned to Yahweh with a complaint against a fleeing wife. Yahweh sent three angels in pursuit, known under the names of the Seine, Sansenoy and Semangelof (Snvi, Snsvi, and Smnglof) .[7]

The three angels caught up with Lilith at the red sea, and she flatly refused to return to her husband.[5]

After threats to kill her, Lilith swore she was sent by God, and that, while its "function" is the killing of babies, she'd spare any child protected by the amulet or plaque with her name (or the names of angels). The angels punished her. There are three versions of this sentence in the literature: hundreds of its babies will die every night; she's doomed to give birth to children of the demons; or God will make her infertile.

In the Jewish home hairy and winged Lilith is especially known as viditelna of childbirth. It was believed that it not only brings damage to the babies, but also taking them, drinking the blood of newborns, sucking the marrow from the bones and replaces them. She also attributed the damage pregnant women and infertility of women.

It is the legends that speak of Lilith as a killer of newborns, explains the tradition to hang an amulet with the names of the angels by the child of a Jewish child.[4] the Amulets and charms for mothers against Lilith should contain not only the names of the three angels who tried to return it, but some of the names most Lilith: Batna (womb), Odem (redness) or Amorfo (a form). Also with this legend is connected with the tradition of tying a red thread on the hand (usually the baby) — it is believed that Lilith is afraid of red color. Lilith in Kabbalistic tradition[edit

In the Kabbalah, Lilith — the devil being in the dream of unmarried young men and seducing them.[4]

According to the Treatise on the left emanation, from when Lilith and Samael was born blind Dragon. Dragon castrated, "so that the eggs of the Viper (echidna) are not hatched into the world." In the Middle ages, the legend has changed: Lilith was not a snake, and the spirit of the night. In the popular imagination, it appears in the form of high silent woman with long black flowing hair.

According to the Kabbalistic book, the Zohar, Lilith became the wife of Samael and mother of demons.
