Pierre Puvis De Chavannes, who lived from December 14, 1824, to October 24, 1898, went to Amiens College and the Lycée Henri IV in Paris. He was supposed to follow in his father's footsteps and become a doctor, but a serious illness cut short his studies. He got better with the help of his brother and sister-in-law in Macon for two years. After getting better in 1845, he went to Italy, which gave him new ideas. When he got back to Paris in 1846, he said he wanted to become a painter. First, he learned from Eugène Delacroix and Henri Scheffer. After that, he worked with Thomas Couture.
Because he liked to work alone, he wasn't trained in the usual way. He moved into a big studio near the Gare de Lyon and took classes at the Académie des Beaux-Arts to learn how to draw people. A few years later, the French government bought one of his works, which brought Pierre Puvis De Chavannes a lot of attention. In 1890, Pierre Puvis De Chavannes was president of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris and one of its founders. It became the most important art salon at the time and put on shows of modern art chosen by a jury made up of officers of the Société.
The Prix Puvis de Chavannes has been given out by the National Society of Fine Arts since 1926. The Prix Puvis de Chavannes is an exhibition in Paris of the most important works by the artist who won that year's prize.
