I started painting at the ripe old age of 62ish. I was forced into early retirement for medical reasons and got bored to death less than 90 days into it. I was scrolling through YouTube and came across Michelle the Painter (Michelle Iglesias). I watched her for hours, she was brilliant. She was so down to earth and she was teaching at such a basic, no-nonse, very beginner level that I thought I might actually be able to learn from her and her teaching style.
For me to learn something new at all was next to impossible because at the age 44 I received a Traumatic Brain Injury in what should have been a fatal motorcycle accident. I nearly had a Masters Degree when the accident happened and in the blink of an eye, life as I knew it was over. It took me and my extensive medical and rehabilitation team from April 15, 2005 until December of 2009 to rehabilitate me to the point where we were all comfortable saying I was able to live "independently" again. Since being cleared to be independent, EVEN after all the rehabilitation, I was only able to maintain simple, minimum wage employment and even that is a struggle for me.
Learning is very difficult but, with Michelle Iglesias' help I am basically a self-taught painter. I was ABSOLUTELY ADDICTED from the very first stroke of the paintbrush. She gave me basic knowledge and skills in the beginning. I have watched and learned from probably 10-15 of her instructional videos because I have to watch each one probably 8-10 times to really grasp the new concepts. Even after that there are some skills I just don't seem to be able to grasp. For example, clouds and the sea, lakes or oceans. I have tried and tried and I just can't get them to look realistic. I have watched several other Artists to learn those things and still no luck. That's how I discovered Paint with Josh. He and Michelle Iglesias are my go too for learning and when I am just looking to paint something new for fun.
Michelle the Painter is the reason I was brave enough to enter my first painting contest. She gives her entire group of followers the encouragement and confidence to believe that they can do it. I have had, what I feel like is, great success in Juried Competitions so I could never thank her enough for all that she has done for me by teaching me to paint.
