In my painting, I represented this parallel between modernity and tradition with the evolution of the drawing which takes shape, which becomes painting then traditional face. The layout evokes circles that could be zooms, focus on the passage of time. The movement of the fan chasing the past to embody the present and conversely.

🇺🇸 After graduating from the University of Fine Arts in St-Etienne, Odile van den Woldenberg devoted herself to painting. Born in 1970 in Annecy, she lives and works in Paris.
Very strongly inspired by her years spent in Japan, her work has itself turned towards the traditional and ancestral side of this country. Attracted by the culture, the symbolism and the colors of kimonos, her paintings are imprinted with calligraphy directly taken from Japanese collections of ancient poetry or Noh texts. The geishas, their deep, white necks, and theatrical masks allow her a different approach to portraiture, which she loves to work on: Tradition and modernity mix in games of framing, reframing, which undoubtedly recall the photographic technique in which she was trained.
🇫🇷 Diplômée de l’université d’Arts Plastiques de St-Etienne, Odile van den Woldenberg se consacre et s’investit dans la peinture à la fin de ses études. Née en 1970 à Annecy, elle vit et travaille à Paris.
Très fortement inspirée de ses années passées au Japon, son œuvre s’est d’elle-même tournée vers le coté traditionnel et ancestral de ce pays. Attirée par la culture, la symbolique et les couleurs des kimonos, ses peintures sont empreintes de calligraphies directement tirées de recueils japonais d’anciennes poésies ou de textes nô. Les geishas, leurs nuques profondes et blanches, et les masques de théâtre lui permettent une approche différente du portrait qu’elle aime beaucoup travailler. Orient et Occident, tradition et modernité se mêlent dans des jeux de cadrages, de recadrages, qui rappellent sans aucun doute la technique photographique à laquelle elle a été formée.
