Of het nu gaat om street art, urban art of graffiti, deze nieuwe artistieke trends zijn al tientallen jaren gevestigd in alle grote steden: van New York tot Parijs of van Londen tot Tokio via Rio. van Janeiro. Allereerst is het gebruik van het woord "Street art" relatief recent. Het dateert uit de jaren 2000. Het werd in 2006 gebruikt tijdens de eerste kunstveilingen met werken van deze artistieke beweging. In 2008 legde de tentoonstelling "street art" in het Tate Modern in Londen deze term op om deze nieuwe unieke artistieke beweging te beschrijven die wordt gekenmerkt door een grote diversiteit aan stijlen (graffiti, collages, stencils, installaties, fresco's, mozaïeken, stickers...)

Je zou kunnen zeggen dat het een wereldwijde kunstbeweging is die begon in de jaren zestig en nog steeds leeft. De diversiteit aan gebruikte media, stijlen, technieken en de vrijheid om te creëren in de openbare ruimte. Het is een nieuwe beweging die de kunstgeschiedenis is binnengedrongen.

Wie heeft straatkunst gemaakt?

Op de muren zijn sinds mensenheugenis sporen van kunst gevonden. Of het nu gaat om muurkunst in de grotten van Lascaux of om namen op de muren van Pompeii, de tekenkunst en graffiti in de openbare ruimte is altijd aanwezig. Wat tegenwoordig street art wordt genoemd, is dus niet helemaal nieuw.

In Frankrijk in de jaren 1930 besloot de kunstenaar Brassaï, geïnteresseerd in graffiti, om ze te fotograferen om ze op foto's te onthouden. In de jaren 1950 haalden Jacques Villeglé (1926-) en Raymond Hains affiches van de straat om met deze verscheurde stukken affiche een kunstwerk te recreëren. Ze legden daarmee de eerste fundamenten van wat later straatkunst zou worden. Tegelijkertijd begon Gérard Zlotykamien (1940-), in 1963, zwarte en rode silhouetten op straat te schilderen die hij “ephemera” zou noemen. Hij zal zijn silhouetten nog enkele jaren blijven schilderen.
Dit thema van silhouetten en het gebruik van spuitverf is ook belangrijk in het werk van Ernest Pignon-Ernest (1942-). Zijn stencil-cut silhouetten en getekend op de muren zijn zijn handtekening. Hij zal bepaalde plaatsen en muren binnendringen met zijn creaties zoals hedendaagse graffitikunstenaars.

Eind jaren zestig was de eerste van de "grafen" in Philadelphia (Verenigde Staten) de kunstenaar Cornbread, die overal zijn handtekening zette. Dit is de geboorte van de eerste tags: hoofdletters gemaakt met een spuitbus. Veel jongeren volgen hun voorbeeld en zullen hun naam op de muren plakken.
In 1969 is Julio 204, in New York, een van de eersten die de stad tagt, hij is ook de eerste die zijn huisnummer aan zijn handtekening toevoegt. Fenomeen dat de markering van de beweging in New York zal worden. Taki 183 is echt de eerste tagger die bekendheid verwierf in de stad, muren en metro's bedekkend met zijn handtekeningen.
Geconfronteerd met de toename van het aantal graffitikunstenaars, beginnen kunstenaars zich te onderscheiden. Stay High 149 is de eerste die grafische elementen toevoegt aan zijn handtekening door de tag te verdubbelen en de halo toe te voegen die zichtbaar is in de Le Saint-serie. In navolging hiervan zullen vele graffitikunstenaars zijn voorbeeld volgen en zal de stijl steeds inventiever worden. Phase 2 is de uitstekende artiest die de tag zal aanpassen door steeds originelere lettervormen te creëren en de compositie te beëindigen met een pijl.

De productieve kunstenaar Seen uit de late jaren 70 produceerde werken in heldere, contrasterende kleuren, terwijl Blade in zijn werk aan perspectief en geometrie werkte. Hij is een van de eerste kunstenaars die door een galerie wordt opgemerkt en zijn eerste tentoonstelling heeft.

Het fenomeen street art verspreidt zich over de hele wereld

De stijl evolueert steeds meer en wijkt soms af van de originele graffiti. De echte jacht van de autoriteiten op de kunstenaars die de deuren en metro's taggen, wordt heviger, de kunstenaars worden gedwongen hun vindingrijkheid om te werken te verdubbelen door steeds sneller te zijn in hun werk en in creativiteit om zich te kunnen onderscheiden van andere kunstenaars . Dit zal ook leiden tot een verandering van plaats voor hun werk en de toename van muren als ondersteuning voor hun prestaties. De evolutie van hun uitrustingsstuk, de spuitbus, evolueert. Er verschijnen veel kleuren en de spuittips bieden kunstenaars een verscheidenheid aan lijndiktes.

Kunstenaars Futura, Dondi White, Rammellzee of A-One waren de toonaangevende kunstenaars van de late jaren 1979 en vroege jaren 1980 in de VS. Ze zijn ook de eersten die een min of meer politieke boodschap aan hun werk geven. Sinds 1979 zijn kunstpodia en alternatieve galerijen geïnteresseerd in straatartiesten en exposeren ze deze. Het succes werd internationaal en vanaf de jaren tachtig exposeerden de kunstenaars Blade, Futura of Seen op tal van tentoonstellingen in Europa. Europese musea zoals museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam zullen straatkunstwerken verwerven. Met de tentoonstellingen en de ontdekking van straatkunst door reizen, van 1983 en 1984, verspreidde het fenomeen zich in Europa (Frankrijk, Italië, Duitsland...)

In Parijs is de eerste bekende graffitikunstenaar Bando die graffiti importeert in Frankrijk en zich aansluit bij de kunstenaars Blek le Rat en Jérôme Mesnager die stencils maken in kunstenaars met behulp van stedelijke dragers.
Het stotterende begin van Parijse graffiti is geconcentreerd aan de oevers van de Seine tussen de Pont Neuf en de Pont de la Concorde. Uitwisselingen tussen Europese kunstenaars nemen toe. De Engelse artiest Mode 2 gaat dus in Parijs aan de slag met Bando die vervolgens samenwerkt met de Nederlander Sho. De uitwisselingen worden ook intenser met Noord-Amerikaanse artiesten zoals JonOne die Bando in New York ontmoette, hij gaat hem laten zien wat er in Parijs gebeurt. JonOne komt dan naar Parijs, hij voegt zich vervolgens bij de Bad Boy Crew (BBC) en blijft uiteindelijk permanent in de Franse hoofdstad. JonOne zal zich onderscheiden van andere artiesten door zich te concentreren op beweging in plaats van op letters. Begin jaren negentig exposeerde de BBC in heel Europa.

Wat is de boodschap van straatkunst?

Was straatkunst tot nu toe in wezen een tagging-techniek, vanaf de jaren negentig zal de stedelijke kunst een kleine revolutie ondergaan. Sommige artiesten zullen de handtekening vervangen door afbeeldingen van gezichten, portretten... zoals Shepard Fairey alias Obey. Nog steeds een student in 1989, creëerde hij een icoon "André de reus heeft een posse" en maakte er een sticker van die hij uitdeelde aan zijn vrienden en hen vroeg om het overal te plakken. Het doel is om ons ervan bewust te maken dat de beelden die we zien allemaal een betekenis hebben en dat het belangrijk is om die te begrijpen.
De nieuwe generatie zal niet langer alleen de spuitbus gebruiken om de stedelijke ruimte binnen te dringen, maar zal stickers, collage, mozaïek, stencil...
De Franse Space Invider zal de openbare ruimte binnendringen door mozaïektegels op de muren te plakken om beelden te creëren die zijn geïnspireerd op de arcadegame Space Invaders uit 1978. Invader heeft meer dan 3000 onderdelen geïnstalleerd in meer dan 60 steden over de hele wereld.

Als reactie op de visuele vervuiling die commerciële communicatie in de openbare ruimte veroorzaakt, zal kunstenaar Zevs de logo's van grote merken afleiden door ze in het donker vloeibaar te maken op de gevels van warenhuizen. Hij zal ook schaduwen van straatmeubilairobjecten creëren door de schaduwen van deze objecten op de trottoirs te schilderen.

In de loop der jaren zal kunstenaar Banksy zijn kunst gebruiken om het falen van de samenleving aan de kaak te stellen met humor, poëzie en schokkende beelden, met name met behulp van de stenciltechniek. Zijn eenvoudige en verfijnde scènes verbazen en markeren de geest. Hij werd al snel een van de beroemdste kunstenaars. Andere Franse artiesten zullen deze techniek gebruiken zoals Miss.Tic, Blek le Rat, Jef Aérosol of C215.

Straatkunst is voortdurend in ontwikkeling. Van de eenvoudige graffiti van zijn begin tot de graffiti van Seen of JonOne, de technieken diversifiëren. Graffitikunstenaars blijven spuitbussen gebruiken om hun werken te creëren. Maar ze gebruiken ook nieuwe technieken en dragers zoals mozaïek, stencil, sticker, installaties, sculptuur of videoprojectie.

Enkele beroemde straatartiesten

Banksy

Kunstenaar die erin slaagde zijn identiteit geheim te houden voor de media. Zijn werken werden aanvankelijk voornamelijk in stencil gemaakt in de straten van Londen voordat ze de straten van de hele wereld binnenvielen.

Zijn satirische en subversieve werk wordt uitgevoerd met als doel een andere manier van denken dan de ambient te benadrukken. Vooral de massamedia. Zijn werk richt zich op sterke politieke en sociale eisen.

De documentaire "Exit Through the Gift Shop" uit 2010 werd genomineerd voor de Oscar voor Beste Documentaire.

Shepard Fairey

Geboren in 1970, is hij een hedendaagse kunstenaar die bekend staat om zijn grafische zeefdrukken. Eerst bekend om zijn stickers, werd zijn werk beroemd dankzij zijn poster van Barrack Obama tijdens de Amerikaanse presidentsverkiezingen in 2008.

Zijn werk bevindt zich in de collecties van vele musea zoals het Museum of Modern Art in New York en het Victoria and Albert Museum in Londen.

Jeff Aërosol

Kunstenaar geboren in 1957. Hij is een van de pioniers van straatkunst in Frankrijk in het begin van de jaren tachtig. Stencilkunstenaar, hij maakt portretten van persoonlijkheden zoals Elvis Presley, Lennon, Basquiat... maar ook anonieme mensen zoals kinderen, voorbijgangers of bedelaars.
