Een vorm van kunst, voornamelijk schilderkunst, die is beïnvloed door spiritualisme, wordt spiritualistische kunst, geestkunst, mediamieke kunst of psychische schilderkunst genoemd. Spirituele kunst had een grote invloed op het modernisme en als gevolg daarvan op de kunst van vandaag.

Georgiana Houghton en Piet Mondriaan zijn twee bekende spirituele kunstenaars. Spiritualisme diende ook als inspiratie voor de baanbrekende abstracte kunst van Vasily Kandinsky, Piet Mondriaan, Kasimir Malevich en František Kupka. Houghton en andere spiritistische kunstenaars hielpen historici bij het erkennen van de betekenis van spiritualisme en het occulte milieu.

In de afgelopen jaren erkennen veel kunstexperts nu de bijdrage van het spiritisme aan de ontwikkeling van moderne abstracte kunst. Toonaangevende hedendaagse kunstenaars zijn nog steeds in interactie met spiritualiteit. Onder leiding van de beroemde Braziliaanse medium-healer John of God werd de Servische performancekunstenaar Marina Abramovic een medium. Veel spiritistische elementen, maar ook elementen uit Afro-Amerikaanse en Aboriginal Australische tradities, zijn aanwezig in haar werk.

Verschillende soorten geestenkunst

Hoewel veel kunstenaars werden beïnvloed door het spiritisme, creëerden maar heel weinig wat spiritisten 'geestkunst' noemen. Wat precies "geestkunst" is, kan in drie hoofdcategorieën worden onderverdeeld: "neergeslagen" kunstwerken; portretten van geesten geschilderd door de handen van mediums tijdens seances; en creaties gemaakt door medium-kunstenaars die beweren dat hun handen door geesten worden geleid.

De mediums beweren dat in het eerste geval van 'neerslag' de geesten geen menselijke kunstenaar gebruikten om hun handen te leiden; in plaats daarvan hebben ze de schilderijen zelf gemaakt. In een tweede voorbeeld van geestenkunst, geestenportretten, was het erg populair voor mediums om portretten te schetsen van de geesten waarvan ze zeiden dat ze aanwezig waren op de seances tijdens het hoogtepunt van het spiritisme. 'Auragraphs', die de geschiedenis, het heden en de toekomst van een persoon weergeven zoals gezien door een medium of helderziende, liggen dicht bij het tweede type 'spirit art'.

Volgens spiritisten bestaat het derde type 'geestkunst' uit werken van architectuur, beeldhouwkunst en schilderkunst die zijn gemaakt door geesten die de handen van de kunstenaar leiden. In de tweede groep (geestenportretten) zouden geesten ook vaak de handen van het medium sturen, maar in de derde categorie worden verschillende kunstwerken gemaakt in plaats van portretten van de geesten zelf.

"Geprecipiteerde" kunstwerken

David Duguid (1832-1907) was het eerste bekende medium dat in staat was om geestschilderijen te "precipiteren". Hoewel Duguid vaak schilderde met behulp van geestschilders, creëerden zijn gidsen tijdens zijn seances ook "directe" (versnelde) schilderijen.

De gebroeders Campbell, die in de spiritistische gemeenschap van Lily Dale, New York woonden, waren misschien wel de eerste mediums die zich specialiseerden in het neerslaan van schilderijen. Ondanks dat ze geen broers waren, deelden Allen Campbell (1833–1919) en Charles Shourds (1863–1926) een huis en hielden ze samen seances. De gebroeders Campbell legden nooit hun handen op het doek tijdens het maken van hun meest bekende portretten, waaronder die van Napoleon en Abraham Lincoln, die in het openbaar werden voltooid. Zelfs vandaag de dag beweren toeristen en de lokale bevolking van Lily Dale spirituele ontmoetingen te hebben gehad voor de meesterwerken van de Campbells.

De Bangs Sisters, Elizabeth (1859-1920) en May Mary Elvira (1862-1917), waren even bekend om hun gehaaste portretten van overleden personen. Hoewel ze vaak werden ontmaskerd als oplichters, werden de Campbell Brothers en de Bangs Sisters sterk beschermd door een aanzienlijk deel van de Amerikaanse spiritistische gemeenschap.

De "Swami Laura Horos", ook wel bekend als Ann Odelia Diss Debar (1849–1911), die beweerde te worden geleid door de geesten van verschillende Europese oude meesters, werd ook in verband gebracht met geestenschilderijen. Debar werd in 1901 gevangengezet nadat ze schuldig was bevonden aan fraude en immoreel seksueel gedrag in haar Londense tempel.

In het begin van haar carrière was Madame Helena Blavatsky (1831–1891), de bekendste en meest legendarische occultist van de 19e eeuw en de grondlegger van de New Age-beweging, ook bezig met het neerslaan van geestenschilderijen.

Spirituele portretten

Victor Hugo (1802–1855) maakte zijn geestenschilderijen tijdens seances in zijn residentie in Jersey, Kanaaleilanden. In die tijd werd een bloeiende spiritualistische markt ook ondersteund door mensen die op zoek waren naar portretten van hun overleden dierbaren in de Verenigde Staten. Daar waren Wella Percy (1833–1900) en Lizzie Pet Anderson (1839–1896; prominent) partners in het leven en spiritualisme. Ze werden gepromoot door Gallery of Spirit Art, een in Brooklyn gevestigde publicatie die alleen kunstwerken bevatte die met de hulp van de geesten waren gemaakt.

Geestenportretten die op seances verschijnen, maken nog steeds deel uit van de huidige spiritualistische scene, en voor personen die denken hun overleden dierbaren te herkennen, kunnen ze een zeer aangrijpende ervaring zijn. Frank Leah (1886-1972) en Coral Polge (1924-2001), twee Britse geestkunstenaars, waren internationaal vermaard op dit gebied.

Enkele honderden geestschilders zetten de traditie voort, waaronder Coral Ryder en Ann Bridge Davies in het Verenigd Koninkrijk, Francesca Ferraro in Canada en Angelique van Bezouwen in Nederland.

Kunst geproduceerd door geesten die de handen van de kunstenaar besturen

Braziliaanse spiritualisten die tranceschilderen beoefenen, channelen vaak het werk van bekende schilders en beeldhouwers. José Medrado (geb. 1961) staat over de hele wereld bekend om zijn trance-acrylschilderijen en om hoe eenvoudig het voor hem is om een kunstwerk te maken met de hulp van vele spirituele assistenten. In trance heeft hij schilderijen gemaakt onder invloed van schildermeesters als Renoir, Vincent Van Gogh, Claude Monet, Matisse, Gauguin, Cassatt, Da Vinci, Morisot, Manet. Ook bekend als Medrado in Brazilië is Luiz Antônio Gasparetto (1949-2018), die met zijn handen schildert en beeldhouwt onder leiding van Degas, Sandro Botticelli, Amedeo Modigliani en vele andere gerenommeerde kunstenaars.

Enkele voorbeelden van geestarchitectuur vallen ook binnen deze categorie. Door het gebruik van mediums onthulde Iulia Hasdeu (1869–1888) de architectonische plannen voor zowel haar beroemde "Castle Hasdeu" in Câmpina als haar graf in Boekarest. Het Italiaanse dorp Rosazza, in de buurt van Biella, gebouwd tussen 1880 en 1899 voor de Italiaanse senator en vrijmetselaar Federico Rosazza (1813–1899), is een ander voorbeeld van spirituele architectuur. Het is ontworpen door schilder Giuseppe Maffei (1821-1901). Het was gebaseerd op plannen die hem waren gegeven door de geesten van Augustinus van Hippo (354-430), die nooit in zijn leven als architect heeft gewerkt, en een naamloze man uit Volterra, Toscane.

Invloed van spiritualisme op hedendaagse kunst

Er is de laatste jaren een heropleving van de belangstelling voor spiritualiteit in de kunstindustrie. In de musea wordt postuum aandacht besteed aan overleden kunstenaars die zich uitgebreid hebben verdiept in mystiek en religie. De boeiende Hilma af Klint-tentoonstelling in het Guggenheim Museum in 2018-2019, die de meest bezochte tentoonstelling in de geschiedenis van het museum werd, is hier misschien wel het bekendste voorbeeld van. Het Whitney Museum of American Art toonde in 2020 Agnes Peltons eerste solotentoonstelling van haar werk in meer dan 20 jaar.

Het idee van spiritualiteit wordt steeds belangrijker in tal van culturele discoursen in de eenentwintigste eeuw, waaronder die van hedendaagse kunst.
