Surrealisme is een literaire en artistieke stroming die in 1924 in Frankrijk verscheen, geschreven door André Breton. Het kan worden vertaald als "boven realisme" of "meer dan echt". Voor de aanstichter is het een dictaat van het denken, waar rede en esthetische of morele zorgen moeten worden uitgewist. Voor Breton wordt het surrealisme gerechtvaardigd door een verlangen naar emancipatie: door het onbewuste te bevrijden om het met het bewuste te verzoenen, zal de mensheid zich kunnen bevrijden van de beperkingen opgelegd door logica en rede. De kunstenaars en schrijvers zullen zich daarom laten inspireren door de dada-beweging, evenals de stellingen van Sigmund Freud, en de werken van de symbolisten, in het bijzonder die van Gustave Moreau en Odilon Redon. In de literatuur zal deze benadering zich manifesteren in merkwaardige experimenten, zoals automatisch schrift of het exquise lijk.
