坂上楠生(Nansei Sakagami)は、日本文化を色濃く表した雅な日本画を描き残した日本のアーティストです。日本画だけでなく油彩画・水彩画も得意とし、独自の技法を取り入れた作品を生み出すなど、和・洋、古典・現代と、表現の振り幅がとても広い唯一無二といえる多才な画家でした。
彼は1947年、三重県伊勢市に生まれました。若い頃は、西洋画への興味とともに、日本文学にも興味を持ち源氏物語などの古典や万葉集、和歌に親しみました。1975年、東京芸術大学美術学部絵画科油画専攻に入学。油絵を精力的に学びながら、日本画の独学を開始しました。やがて、大和絵の世界への思いが増し、"油絵での大和絵風現代絵画"の道を歩み始めましたが、日本画の岩絵具の美しさ、金銀箔泥の美しさにすっかり魅了されてしまいます。その後も独学で日本画を習得し、古典的技法で雅な大和絵作品を数多く生み出しました。色鮮やかな水彩画では、新聞連載小説や冊子等の挿絵で広く活躍し多くの人を魅了しました。
坂上楠生(Nansei Sakagami)が生涯掲げていた、画家としてのポリシーは、「私の作品を見た人々に、元気や喜び、夢と希望を与えていける画家でありたい、それが私の夢と希望だ。」この気持ちを胸に、どこまでも人々の幸せを願い彼は描き続けました。
