This piece is part of the shroud.m series, which investigates the spiritual act of “covering”—not as concealment, but as reverence. To shroud something, in my artistic language, is to protect its essence, to slow the gaze, to encourage stillness. In silence, the act of veiling becomes a way to amplify presence. By muting noise, we begin to sense what lies underneath—what cannot be heard, only felt.
Suspended above the canvas is a meticulously constructed grid of transparent acrylic rods. These rods act as visual filters, disrupting direct access to the painting and creating a rhythmic distortion as the viewer shifts position. Light reflects and refracts across their surface, producing a subtle interference pattern that mirrors the elusive nature of silence itself—never fully graspable, always in motion.
The materials—acrylic, resin, and 23-karat gold leaf—were layered in a manner that evokes geological time and celestial breath. The gold leaf appears as if it’s emerging through the surface, not resting on it, hinting at a sacred presence always pressing up from within. Violet, often associated with introspection and spirituality, forms a quiet foundation beneath the more luminous upper layers.
The work is intentionally ambiguous—neither landscape nor figure, neither sky nor ground. It exists in a liminal space, a threshold between seen and unseen, surface and depth, presence and void. It asks the viewer not “what is this?” but “what am I feeling when I see this?”
Created in early 2025, shroud.m – silence was selected for exhibition at The 81st Contemporary Art Exhibition Gen-Ten at The National Art Center, Tokyo, a major public art event in Japan. It was praised for its material innovation and meditative visual impact.
This painting is not meant to be “read” in a conventional sense. It is a space—an atmospheric altar—for whatever silence might mean to the viewer: peace, solitude, divinity, mourning, healing, or awakening.
Through shroud.m – silence, I invite you to pause—not to escape the world, but to return to it more deeply attuned to its invisible rhythms.

Masako Nunokawa is a contemporary Japanese painter based in Hokkaido. Her works explore the intersection of spirituality, silence, and materiality through abstract ink paintings, embroidery, and traditional Japanese materials such as Nishijin textiles and washi paper.
With parents who graduated from art universities, she developed a deep appreciation for art from an early age and received high praise for her works. In her 20s, she settled in New York, gained experience in design and marketing, and upon returning to Japan, her innovative marketing strategies and achievements were recognized, earning her multiple president's awards and gaining her attention.
In terms of education, she obtained a PhD in art and cultural studies from a national graduate school in Japan, dedicating herself to art while also engaging in academic research. Her deep intellectual foundation has formed an aesthetic language that blends meditative practices with cultural symbols.
She is currently dedicated to creating “Neo-Wa” art—a fusion of classical Japanese aesthetics and contemporary spiritual exploration. Her three major series, “shroud.m,” “ascent.m,” and “flow.m,” express a transcendent journey from concealment to sublimation and liberation.
Each work is a meditative act, a visual offering—a quiet rebellion against speed, mass production, and superficiality. Nunokawa's works invite viewers to pause and connect with inner stillness.
She holds international exhibitions, aiming to redefine the commercial value of art through depth, sincerity, and resonance.
