Marcello Mogni
The recent series of paintings dedicated to the “Chemical Suburbs” describe, between reality and metaphor, the world of industrial plants, petrochemical industry and its tragic consequences on the environment and on people’s lives.
They present themselves in part as a realistic description of landscape details: chimneys, pipes, gasholders, tanks, etc., which, however, are compositionally reassembled in an allusive or fantastic way, creating a metaphorical scenery prefiguring looming or already ongoing environmental disasters.
What was once the spiritual and cultural landmark of the city, namely its cathedral, becomes now by symbolic transposition a gray technological monstrosity. Its tubular structures are the arteries that go through and wrap around the suburbs forcing men to necessarily coexist in harmony with them.
