My art melds the earthy heat of America’s southwest and the full bloom of love between wymyn. Using the suppleness, sensuality and strength of oil paints, I draw on formal classical structure to produce languorous poses and pairings, and through that encounter, invite viewers to refresh, even question their broader sense of how conventions—of art, society, culture, and gender—shape what and how we see. Whose gazes do conventions mobilize, and suppress? What preconditions would allow my art to speak against the grain and be heard? When my creative energy flashes into a constellation that becomes a painting, what aspects of that inspired, universally human moment survive the filters of category, canon and reflexive habit among viewers? The unabashed subjects and hues in my work, combined with its large scale, encourage such reflections about "the gaze", but above all, the love and compassion suffusing each canvas embody affirmation, inclusion, and respect for difference.
