Leona Craig Art is a different kind of contemporary Chinese art gallery. First of all, we cover artists from the whole contemporary period, including the second generation of modern Chinese artists, many of whom are still alive and working. Thus, our art, also, in a sense, presents a history of most of China's modern post-imperial era, as seen from the artist's point of view. Moreover, while the press and many galleries focus on the latest craze, the art of the first generation of modern Chinese artists has been achieving record auction results, and we are sure that it will not be too long before that of the second generation will get more attention. Indeed, we do not just choose art from artists who are part of the latest fad in contemporary Chinese art, but we look closely and carefully at art from artists, old and new, known and unknown, to find fine art with more unusual, but meaningful, social commentary. Instead of the same sullen or red faced people, in new situations, we offer a variety of art, covering a range of topics, in imaginative ways. And if political art is your thing, instead of current artists who mock the Cultural Revolution and Mao from a safe distance of several decades, we have art by artists who confronted them, during the actual period.
The curator of the collection is Craig Mattoli (马特利) who has been collecting art since he was six years old, has been investing in inefficient markets for several decades, through his company, Red Hill Capital. In the 1980's, he was a Wall Street arbitrageur, and, in the 1990's, he created one of the first art inns, in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. He and his team have been working, in China, with various artists for almost a decade, getting to know the market for modern Chinese art, from the inside. Leona Craig Art has taken up residence in Dongshan Kou, an old part of Guangzhou (Canton), whose buildings date back to the early 1900's, and which, with Leona Craig Art's help, is on its way to becoming the Soho of Guangzhou, as it reminds Mattoli of Soho, in New York, in the 1970's.

Talking Dogs
The more I see of men, the more I like dogs. ---Romain Rolland
The feeling I have for dogs started in 2009. My child was not born at the time. I had a black and white papillon, it was a little puppy, and it brought us a lot of fun. However, after three months, it got lost when we took it out for a walk. My wife was too sad to eat for days, she even cried for it. Since then, I have had a special feeling for dogs.
According to research, the dog is one of the first animals to be trained by humans. In my opinion, the dog is a very intelligent animal, it is a symbol of loyalty and justice. Generally, there are two kinds of dogs, wild dogs and family dogs. For wild dogs, they grow up in the wild, they get used to the law of the jungle，the survival of the fittest. On the other hand, family dogs are trained and being in captivity, they are loyal to their masters.
Since 2009, I have painted around 30 dogs in this series: some of them are wearing glasses and a tie, acting like an official, some of them are wearing Chinese stomachers, some of them are wearing headphones, listening to music. They are standing, lying or squatting. They are happy, depressed, confused, or angry. Isn’t that the life we have in big cities like this? I try to put some light elements like clouds and falling flowers into my works, they are the symbol of uncertainty and floating. These dogs, just like people living in the metropolis, are also uncertain about the future. Under the prosperous appearance, things are not real. As time goes on, the prosperous, just like falling flowers, fade out. I try to make the clouds light as a foil for the heavy mood of these dogs. They come to the metropolis for more freedom, however, people these days have too much status and material things, all these restrict the freedom they deserve. However, we have to accept the heavy outcome from the desire we run for. In this case, freedom is just like a dream. For my dogs, I try to paint their faces like real human beings - they are acting different roles, telling us different stories about life, explaining their relationships between humans and nature, as well as human to human. In this society, it symbolizes the falling apart and rebuilding of the undesirable phenomena in the modern world.

Shen Jianwei Bio
Born in 1965, in Guangzhou, Shen attended the High school of the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Art. He eventually graduated from Guangzhou Academy of Fine Art, in 1988, with a degree in oil painting. After graduation, Shen got a job in in design in advertising, which was a relatively new field, in China, at the time. Eventually, he opened his own interior design company because he wanted to be involved in total home decoration, not just producing painting to add to that. He tells us that the reason that he finally came back to painting was that he grew weary of trying to show Chinese clients how to show taste in home decoration, only to have them want to do it in their own tasteless styles. Thus, he eventually came back to painting full time, only in the middle of the last decade.
Jian has specialized in painting gold fish, among other scenes from nature, and still life. Gold fish are a very prominent part of life, in the East, on the one hand. On the other hand, goldfish in water, create a subject matter than requires technical skill, in the interplay of light, objects, colors, bubbles, and water, and Jian's works can appear anywhere in the spectrum of tight realism to more on the abstract side. As it turns out, in the hands of Jian, Gold fish, as a topic for paintings, can provide quite a bit of breadth and variety. And after all, is not creativity but variations on a theme. He tells us that he paints them because they are considered lucky, but we know that what really attracts him is the complex problem of dealing with light, its reflection and refraction, bubbles and ripples, in painting pictures of fish in water.

Zhao Bao Cheng Bio
Zhao Baocheng was born, in 1943, in Manchuria. In 1969 graduated from lLuxun Academy of Fine Arts, in painting. He also received a degree in art education, in 1986, from the Liaoning Institute of Education. He has been an associate professor and Deputy Director of the Department of art at Benxi Teachers Training college and professor of art at China Metallurgical College. His works have been selected for the National Fine Arts Exhibition, the China art exhibition and were collected by the National Art Museum of China.
