Borderline (2024) 绘画 由 Kelley Hudson

I grew up in a border town, San Diego, where I could come and go from Mexico as I pleased. The most common request was that I looked out for “the cartel” and carried cash for police bribes should I end up in the wrong place at the wrong time. And although I never ran into the cartel or bribed the police, the amount of people I have come across in my life that claim to is astonishing. The amount of people I've met that tell me these stories and how they cant wait for their next vacation to Cabo in a single breath is also astonishing.

At many points along the border you are elevated over it enough that you can see both sides at the same time. Be it the pedestrian bridges or the neighborhoods above on the cliffs, it’s hard to ignore that our lives are visually very different once you get that overhead scene. This perception of borderlands was forever cemented in my mind and made me ever-curious to see more of these walls and barricades and eventually to draw one.

The borderland I’ve depicted is not a specific place in the world but a composite image in my head of the many borderlands I’ve seen and researched. Under the guise of safety, I genuinely feel that most large walls and borders only serve to keep us from seeing each others’ true resources and that’s what I’ve attempted to show in this work. One side of the borderland is almost always much wealthier than the other and when those contrasts begin to grow, so do the walls.
