Julija Levuskane is a Latvian-based painter known for intimate oil-on-canvas works that balance tonal abstraction with hints of the observable world. Born and raised in Russia, she earned a degree in linguistics before relocating with her family to Latvia in 2004, where painting shifted from pastime to vocation.
In 2010 Levuskane was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis; progressive tremor in her dominant right hand eventually made writing and drawing impossible. Undeterred, she retrained herself to paint left-handed, refining a tactile, palette-knife technique that heightens the atmospheric quality of her surfaces.
Since 2020 her flower studies, weather-inflected landscapes, and “portraits of mood” have appeared in group exhibitions across Latvia and found collectors at home and abroad. Preferring modest formats, she layers quiet greys, tempered whites, and earthy flashes of colour, letting tonal fields dissolve into abstract geometry even when the subject is recognizable. Through this approach Levuskane transforms everyday motifs into meditations on fragility, resilience, and the subtle tones that lie between.
