Juan-Luis Quintana

Juan Luis Quintana, a painter with a long career of exhibits in places ranging from Belgium to America, grew tired of the domination of a few in the world of exhibitions. As an independent artist, he grasped for a way to make his art more accessible and came up with the idea of a nomad gallery. He found the ideal space for his gallery on Enric Granados. ¨Albion Art is in Barcelona today, but tomorrow it could be in any city in Spain or in the world for that matter, occupying a totally different physical space than where it is now,¨ says the artist. ¨Why should a gallery be a static thing?¨

The exhibit titled ¨Anthropomorphic Landscapes¨ reflects the artist´s search for form using his own distinct palette and abstract style which hints at the diverse lands which have inspired his work. These places range from Zanzibar, Uyuni, Riga, and Santa Fe, New Mexico but Quintana never forgets his native Catalonia. His sophisticated use of color transmits a sense of peace and suggests another reality just out of our reach.

In his work Quintana creates a transcendental world of objects with deep meaning like in his series of totems. The beauty of his world of recognizable objects and habitats goes beyond functionality to touch us in a deeper way. His own personal vision translates easily to universal archetypes. The visitor to the exhibition can enjoy the paintings on many levels: for their beauty of colour and form or as a reflection of a more interior landscape.

Juan Luis Quintana and the Dynamics of his Paintings.

We start from reality and proceed toward the idea , but if we are to believe Plato, the idea are there before the world we ground ourselves. I believe that is what Juan Luis Quintana has discovered. he develops his paintings from the position of one who wishes the enegy of those spirits superior in purity with the vital experience to wich we belong.
-Unite the abstracts with the concrete, the spiritual with the corporal-
Juan Luis Quintana's paintings seem to descend from some height where shades of color are the only language. And from this confrontation with concrete reality, driven by a need to comunicate with beings who need forms in order to understand each other, he recreates the fish, the airplaine, the coleopters, the lickens and the other goemetric forms as a primary proof of his capacity to comprehend those who do not understand.
I assume that the real process has been just the oposite: from his desire to capture the concrete details, he would move to the most intense abstraction.
Perhaps that is why his paintings seem to come from another world and why one sees in all of them the dynamics of a soul in transition.
The other reality that of the soul had been observed by Juan Luis Quintana during his own superior sojourn, while he was describing one by one the tensions that surrounded him. Now he has managed to establish a subtle relationship between both positions in harmony with he feelings.

Juan Luis Quintana y la din‡mica de su Pintura.

Partimos de la realidad y vamos hacia el pensamiento, pero si ceyŽramos en Pl‡ton comprobar'amos que la idea est‡ antes que el mundo en el que nos basamos. Ello es lo que ha descubierto, a mi entender, Juan-Luis Quintana (Barcelona 1953) que trabaja la pintura desde la posici-n del que quiere unir la din‡mica de los espiritus superiores en pureza con la experienca vital a la que pertenecemos.
La pintura de Juan-Luis Quintana parece descender de unas alturas donde el color con sus matices y veladuras fuera el œnico lenguaje. Y de la confrontaci-n con los hechos, urgido por la necesidad de comunicarse con unos seres que necesitan las formas para entenderse, recrear‡, el pez, el avi-n, el cole-ptero, los liquenes y la letra como primeras muestras de su capacidad para comprender a los que no entienden.
Supongo que el proceso real ha sido al contrario: del af‡n por captar el detalle, pasaria a la abstracci-n m‡s intensa, de la que ahora regresa.
Es por ello, quiz‡ que su pintura parecevenir de otro mundo y se aprecia en toda ella una dim‡mica de alma en transito.
La otra realidad, aquella que esta en el pensamiento, habia sido observada or Juan Luis Quintana en su propia estancia superior, mientras que describia por separado las tensiones de su entorno. Ahora ha conseguido establecer un sutil hilo de relaci-n entre ambas situaciones y nos ofrece una pintura en la que se manifiestan ambas posiciones en concordancia de sentimientos.

El pintor Juan Luis Quintana dejó el año pasado seis obras suyas en una galería de arte de Barcelona y ya no las ha vuelto a ver. Y no es porque haya aparecido algún coleccionista interesado en adquirir su Santo Grial o en deleitarse con su Totems urbi et orbe: los cuadros, sencillamente, han desaparecido. Quintana sospecha que están en manos del que fue director de la galería Art Works, ahora cerrada: el holandés Toni Van Schaik. El Juzgado de Instrucción número 25 de Barcelona investiga el caso por posible apropiación indebida y ha emitido una orden de busca y captura del sospechoso, que no acudió a declarar y se encuentra en paradero desconocido.

Hace dos años, Van Schaik instaló Art Works en una planta baja cercana a la plaza de Sant Jaume. Con la ayuda de su pareja, Lorry, el holandés atrajo a varios artistas españoles y europeos deseosos de dar una salida comercial a sus obras. Tal fue el caso de Quintana, a quien, mediante un correo electrónico, Lorry animó a exponer allí sus obras recientes. "No era una galería al uso; parecía más bien un pequeño centro de mercado de arte", recuerda, a toro pasado, el pintor barcelonés.

Beneficios repartidos
Quintana dejó en depósito sus cuadros -"los pintores también tenemos que comer", dice-. El contrato no dejaba lugar a dudas: en caso de venta, el galerista y el pintor se repartían los beneficios al 50%. Las condiciones para el resto eran similares. Quintana asegura que Art Works acumulaba entre 200 y 250 pinturas pertenecientes a más de una veintena de artistas. Aunque no se trata de artistas de fama internacional, su valor en el mercado habría alcanzado "en torno a 300.000 euros".

Desde Suecia, donde está establecido, Serguéi Jakovlev dio la primera voz de alarma. Intentó ponerse en contacto con Van Schaik para preguntarle por sus cuadros, también almacenados en Art Works. Lo intentó vía e-mail y por teléfono. En vano. No había ni rastro de él. Serguéi trasladó su preocupación a Quintana, quien, amargamente, comprobó que la galería había cerrado sus puertas. Después de varios meses sin pagar el alquiler del local, situado en el número 3 de la calle del Paradís, Van Schaik fue desahuciado por el propietario. Desde entonces, los pintores afectados no han vuelto a saber nada de él, y tampoco de sus cuadros.

Fue Quintana quien removió cielo y tierra para aclarar lo sucedido. Denunció la desaparición en una comisaría de los Mossos d'Esquadra y se puso en contacto con las más de 20 víctimas del supuesto robo, quienes, a su vez, presentaron denuncias en sus respectivos países: Portugal, Francia, Italia, Holanda y Suecia, entre otros.

Una persistente incógnita asaltaba a Quintana y al resto de los pintores: ¿permanecían los cuadros en su sitio, en la galería, o habían sido sustraídos? El pasado 30 de mayo salieron de dudas. El juzgado levantó el precinto y Quintana pudo comprobar con sus propios ojos que ni su Eolorama ni su Alcor estaban donde los vio por última vez. "Me sentó fatal porque tenía una mínima esperanza. Me afectó tanto que no pude pintar en unos meses", relata.

La justicia investiga ahora dónde están las pinturas. Para ello será básico encontrar antes a Van Schaik. Quintana sospecha que el galerista se llevó todos los cuadros a Holanda y los vendió en un mismo lote, a bajo precio. "Allí, a diferencia de España, existe una tradición muy fuerte de compra y venta de obras de arte", apunta.

Lo cierto es que sobre Van Schaik pesan ni más ni menos que tres órdenes de busca y captura, incluida la del Juzgado de Instrucción número 25. El hombre, natural de Utrecht, ha sido detenido en varias ocasiones por la policía: por robo con fuerza, por homicidio en Vilanova y por tráfico de drogas en La Jonquera

Toni van Schaik was a gallerist who stole more than 200 paintings from artists. He had a gallery called Art Works in Barcelona, calle Paradis. Juan Luis Quintana is a contemporary painter born in Barcelona, Spain. He has a BFA from the University of Barcelona and other studies: Phd coursework, courses in Computer Art at the Art Institute of Chicago.
His Artworks are monstly abstraction using geometric forms, color and shapes related to nature.

Paisajes Antropomorficos.
Como su nombre indica "Paisajes Antropomorficos" es una tematica que representa, entornos relacionados con el habitat, costumbres y objetos del ser humano.
Juan Luis Quintana representa todo un mundo de formas que surgen de ideas abstractas, y que se concretan y transforman en cosas reconocibles, sin perder sin embargo su lado de ambigŸedad.
Pinturas como -Reliquiario, Colapsos genŽticos, Totems, Ceramica funeraria, Habitat, Eclipse, Singor, etc. son pinturas cuyas formas surgen de lo arquetipico, y que por tanto transmiten un lado arcaico de prototipos de cosas cuyos elementos transcienden su propia belleza en lo que podria ser el recuerdo de las cosas ideales y primitivas.
El interes del artista por descubrir formas nuevas esta sugerido a taves del contorno, el primer plano, y el fondo.
El color es intimista o evocador de paisajes interiores, con un color de intensidad suave.
Algo que utiliza el pintor son las tonalidades de paisajes naturales y que por tanto transmiten un caracter reposado y sereno.
En definitiva la obra de este pintor diriase que nos tnasmite conocimiento y belleza a la vez y eso lo hace a traves de una estŽtica interpretada como un mundo ideal.

As its name states "Anthropomorphic Landscapes" is a pictorical subject matter that represents dwellings, customs, and objects of human beings in the world.
The art of Juan Luis Quintana represents a world of shapes that comes from abstract ideas; these are transformed and materialized in recognizable forms which retain some measure of ambiguity.
Paintings like Reliquiario, Genetic colapses, Totems, Ceramics, Dwelling, Eclipse, or Singor suggest and transmit cultural archetypes.
The artists is interested in looking at these new archetypes through outlines and shapes in the background which define the painted object.
The color suggests inner spaces and soft tones. Colors are taken from nature and consequently transmit calm and relaxation.
The artwork of this painter transmits knowledge and beauty at the same time. The essential root of these paintings comes from an interpretation of the world as an ideal.

Anthropomorphic landscapes
This series of paintings represents the beauty of objects that humans can design and build for material r purposes. However the topic of anthropomorphic landscapes is related to human environment as well. The inner world is connected with the outside and the beauty of nature affects the nature of humans beings. We live sourrounded by nature and we produce, construct, and create what we need to live. When an object transmits beauty it is more than an object and this is how ancient objects can exist beyons the material world of what they were made for, because they can also transmit beauty.
