José Pedro Santos Almeida
José Pedro Santos is a Portuguese artist and conservator. He studied in Portucalense and Católica Universities in Oporto. Raised in an artistic environment, since childhood he showed some skills in drawing and painting. In 2008, he began to study painting and made some initial works strongly influenced by Surrealism. The need to further develophis craft in painting lead him to learn and explore the classical technique. He cites Portuguese artists Henrique Medina, António Macedo as well as American artists John Singer Sargent, Jacob Collins, Teresa Oaxaca, among others, as major style influences and references. He has participated in solo and group exhibitions, a particular highlight being the 2018 honourable mention attributed in the I International Contest of Contemporary Sacred Art in Braga city. The majority of his commissions are religious paintings, namely : Stations of the Cross and The Baptism of Christ in the Church of Flamengos, Island of Faial; Four Eucharist themes in the Church of São Tiago in Lanhoso, Braga; Saint George slaying the dragon in the city council of Velas, São Jorge Island; main altar painting of the Sistelo Church; a painting to Wawelberg Hotel in Saint Petersburg and a significant part of his work is now part of private collections. He was the invited artist by Regional Directorate for Culture of Azores to the commemoration of the International Council on Monuments and Sites in São Jorge Island. He was the author of the total chromatic restoration of the main altar piece painting of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción and Nuestra Señora del Rosario both attributed to spanish painter Murillo, displayed in the Basilica Cathedral of Santa Maria La Antígua, city of Panamá, World Heritage by Unesco and he was part of the team of conservators responsible for the conservation of the altar pieces which were officially inaugurated by Pope Francis in 2019. He had been producing several art works, which a considered number of them are portraits, working mostly by private commission.
