Il achète son premier pinceau à l'âge de 16 ans.
Á la suite de ses études en, « LETTRES SUPERIEURES », HypoKhâgne (Paris), il obtient une Licence d'Histoire et de sociologie (Université de Paris X, Nanterre). Par la suite, il obtient une Licence d'Arts plastiques (Paris, Sorbonne).
Peintre de l'imaginaire, Thierry VAN QUICKENBORNE expose depuis 1980. Sa renommée dépasse les frontières. Il se rapproche des surréalistes, des visionnaires, du steampunk, sans réellement appartenir à ces mouvements. Il s'agit donc d'une peinture ancrée dans son époque tout en restant dans la marge.
Membre de la fondation Taylor, il a reçu de nombreux prix, exposé en galerie aux USA, en France, Belgique, Allemagne, Japon…, participé à de nombreux Salons (Grand Palais Paris, Art Expo New York, United Arab Emirats …). Il figure dans de multiples collections privées, au musée de l’aéroport d’Orly (France), dans les livres d’Art « Apocalypses » et « Le cheval dans la peinture fantastique ».
