Che si tratti di street art, urban art o graffiti, queste nuove tendenze artistiche si sono affermate ormai da diversi decenni in tutte le principali città: da New York a Parigi o da Londra a Tokyo passando per Rio. di Janeiro. Innanzitutto, l'uso della parola "Street art" è relativamente recente. Risale agli anni 2000. È stato utilizzato nel 2006 durante le prime aste d'arte che rappresentavano opere di questo movimento artistico. Nel 2008 la mostra "street art" alla Tate Modern di Londra ha imposto questo termine per descrivere questo nuovo singolare movimento artistico caratterizzato da una grande diversità di stile (graffiti, collage, stencil, installazioni, affreschi, mosaici, adesivi...)

Si potrebbe dire che è un movimento artistico globale che è iniziato negli anni '60 ed è ancora vivo oggi. La diversità dei media utilizzati, degli stili, delle tecniche e la libertà di creare nello spazio pubblico. È un nuovo movimento che è entrato nella storia dell'arte.

Chi ha creato la street art?

Tracce d'arte sono state trovate sulle pareti da tempo immemorabile. Che si tratti di arte parietale nelle grotte di Lascaux, o di nomi trovati sui muri di Pompei, l'arte del disegno e dei graffiti nello spazio pubblico si trova sempre. Quella che oggi si chiama street art non è quindi del tutto nuova.

In Francia negli anni '30, l'artista Brassaï, interessato ai graffiti, decise di fotografarli per memorizzarli nelle foto. Negli anni '50, Jacques Villeglé (1926-) e Raymond Hains recuperarono manifesti dalla strada per ricreare un'opera d'arte con questi pezzi lacerati di poster. Posero così le prime basi di quella che poi sarebbe diventata street art. Contemporaneamente Gérard Zlotykamien (1940-), nel 1963, iniziò a dipingere per strada sagome nere e rosse che chiamerà “effimere”. Continuerà a dipingere le sue sagome per diversi anni.
Questo tema delle sagome e l'uso della vernice spray sono importanti anche nel lavoro di Ernest Pignon-Ernest (1942-). Le sue sagome ritagliate a stencil e disegnate sui muri sono la sua firma. Invaderà determinati luoghi e muri con le sue creazioni come i graffiti artist di oggi.

Alla fine degli anni '60, a Filadelfia (Stati Uniti), il primo dei "grafi" fu l'artista Cornbread, che appose la sua firma ovunque. Nascono così le prime etichette: lettere maiuscole realizzate con uno spray aerosol. Molti giovani seguono il loro esempio e appenderanno il loro nome sui muri.
Nel 1969 Julio 204, a New York è uno dei primi ad etichettare in città, è anche il primo ad aggiungere il suo numero civico alla sua firma. Fenomeno che diventerà il segno distintivo del movimento newyorkese. Taki 183 è davvero il primo tagger a farsi conoscere in città, tappezzando muri e treni della metropolitana con le sue firme.
Di fronte all'aumento del numero di artisti di graffiti, gli artisti stanno iniziando a cercare di differenziarsi. Stay High 149 è il primo ad aggiungere elementi grafici alla sua firma raddoppiando la sua etichetta e aggiungendo l'alone visibile nella serie Le Saint. In seguito molti artisti di graffiti seguiranno il suo esempio e lo stile diventerà sempre più inventivo. Phase 2 è l'eccezionale artista che modificherà il tag creando forme di lettere sempre più originali e terminando la sua composizione con una freccia.

Il prolifico artista della fine degli anni '70 Seen ha prodotto opere in colori vivaci e contrastanti mentre Blade ha lavorato sulla prospettiva e sulla geometria nel suo lavoro. È uno dei primi artisti ad essere notato da una galleria e ad avere la sua prima mostra.

Il fenomeno della street art si sta diffondendo in tutto il mondo

Lo stile si sta evolvendo sempre di più, a volte allontanandosi dai graffiti originali. Si intensifica la vera e propria caccia condotta dalle autorità contro gli artisti che taggano le porte e i vagoni della metropolitana, gli artisti sono costretti a raddoppiare il loro ingegno per lavorare essendo sempre più rapidi nel loro lavoro e nella creatività per riuscire a distinguersi dagli altri artisti . Ciò comporterà anche un cambio di luogo per il loro lavoro e l'aumento dei muri come supporto per le loro realizzazioni. L'evoluzione del loro strumento di lavoro l'aerosol può evolversi. Appaiono molti colori e le punte spray consentono agli artisti una varietà di spessori di linea.

Gli artisti Futura, Dondi White, Rammellzee o A-One sono stati i principali artisti della fine degli anni '79 e dei primi anni '80 negli Stati Uniti. Sono anche i primi a dare un messaggio più o meno politico al loro lavoro. Dal 1979 luoghi d'arte e gallerie alternative si interessano ed espongono artisti di street art. Il successo diventa internazionale e dagli anni '80 gli artisti Blade, Futura o Seen espongono in numerose mostre in Europa. Musei europei come il museo Boijmans Van Beuningen di Rotterdam acquisiranno opere di street art. Con le mostre e la scoperta della street art attraverso i viaggi, dal 1983 al 1984, il fenomeno si diffonde in Europa (Francia, Italia, Germania...)

A Parigi, il primo artista di graffiti conosciuto è Bando che importa graffiti in Francia e si unisce agli artisti Blek le Rat e Jérôme Mesnager che realizzano stencil negli artisti utilizzando supporti urbani.
Gli inizi balbettanti dei graffiti parigini si concentrano sulle rive della Senna tra il Pont Neuf e il Pont de la Concorde. Si intensificano gli scambi tra artisti europei. L'artista inglese Mode 2 lavorerà così a Parigi con Bando che poi collaborerà con l'olandese Sho. Si stanno intensificando gli scambi anche con artisti nordamericani come JonOne che ha incontrato Bando a New York, gli mostrerà cosa si sta facendo a Parigi. JonOne arriva quindi a Parigi, si unisce poi alla Bad Boy Crew (BBC) e finisce per restare stabilmente nella capitale francese. JonOne si differenzierà dagli altri artisti concentrandosi sul movimento piuttosto che sul lettering. All'inizio degli anni '90, la BBC ha esposto in tutta Europa.

Qual è il messaggio della street art?

Se fino ad oggi la street art era essenzialmente una tecnica di tagging, dagli anni '90 l'arte urbana vivrà una piccola rivoluzione. Alcuni artisti sostituiranno la firma con rappresentazioni di volti, ritratti...- come Shepard Fairey alias Obey. Ancora studente nel 1989, crea un'icona “André the Giant Has a Posse” e ne ricava un adesivo che distribuisce ai suoi amici chiedendo loro di appiccicarlo ovunque. Il suo obiettivo è renderci consapevoli che le immagini che vediamo hanno tutte un significato e che è importante capirlo.
La nuova generazione non utilizzerà più solo la bomboletta spray per invadere lo spazio urbano, ma utilizzerà adesivi, collage, mosaici, stencil...
Il francese Space Invider invaderà lo spazio pubblico incollando tessere di mosaico sulle pareti per creare immagini ispirate al gioco arcade del 1978 Space Invaders. Invader ha installato oltre 3000 parti in oltre 60 città in tutto il mondo.

In reazione all'inquinamento visivo creato dalla comunicazione commerciale nello spazio pubblico, l'artista Zevs devierà i loghi dei grandi marchi liquefacendoli sulle facciate dei grandi magazzini dopo il tramonto. Creerà anche ombre di oggetti di arredo urbano dipingendo le ombre di questi oggetti sui marciapiedi.

Nel corso degli anni, l'artista Banksy utilizzerà la sua arte per denunciare i fallimenti della società con umorismo, poesia e immagini scioccanti, in particolare utilizzando la tecnica dello stencil. Le sue scene semplici e raffinate stupiscono e segnano gli animi. Divenne rapidamente uno degli artisti più famosi. Altri artisti francesi useranno questa tecnica come Miss.Tic, Blek le Rat, Jef Aérosol o C215.

La street art è in continua evoluzione. Dai semplici graffiti dei suoi esordi ai graffiti di Seen o JonOne, le tecniche si stanno diversificando. Gli artisti dei graffiti continuano a utilizzare le bombolette spray per creare le loro opere. Ma usano anche nuove tecniche e supporti come il mosaico, lo stencil, l'adesivo, le installazioni, la scultura o la videoproiezione.

Banksy

Artista che è riuscito a mantenere segreta la sua identità ai media. Le sue opere realizzate principalmente in stencil inizialmente nelle strade di Londra prima di invadere le strade di tutto il mondo.

Il suo lavoro satirico e sovversivo è svolto con l'obiettivo di evidenziare un modo di pensare diverso da quello ambient. Soprattutto i mass media. Il suo lavoro si concentra su forti rivendicazioni politiche e sociali.

Il documentario del 2010 "Exit Through the Gift Shop" è stato nominato per l'Oscar come miglior documentario.

Shepard Fairey

Nato nel 1970, è un artista contemporaneo noto per le sue serigrafie grafiche. Conosciuto prima per i suoi adesivi, il suo lavoro è diventato famoso grazie al suo poster di Barrack Obama durante le elezioni presidenziali americane nel 2008.

Il suo lavoro è nelle collezioni di molti musei come il Museum of Modern Art di New York e il Victoria and Albert Museum di Londra.

Jeff Aerosol

Artista nato nel 1957. È uno dei pionieri della street art in Francia nei primi anni '80. Stencil artist, realizza ritratti di personaggi come Elvis Presley, Lennon, Basquiat... ma anche persone anonime come bambini, passanti o mendicanti.
