Art brut, o outsider art, termine coniato dall'artista francese Jean Dubuffet nel 1945, designa questa particolare forma di espressione creativa, principalmente il lavoro di artisti autodidatti, bambini, persone emarginate o pazienti psichiatrici, che mirano a raggiungere una sorta di coscienza della "differenza".

Infatti, il risultato della produzione di questo particolare tipo di artisti sono opere molto insolite e istintive, che, a parte stili o movimenti particolari, sono estremamente crude ed emotive.

Qual è la storia dell'Outsider Art?

La grande sensibilità e la forte ammirazione che Dubuffet nutre e manifesta verso la "purezza" dell'arte degli emarginati si sviluppa da fondamentali incontri con il maestro francese.

In particolare, l'art brut di Dubuffet fu largamente influenzato nei suoi concetti principali dall'opera di due famosi psichiatri, ovvero Walter Morgenthaler e Hans Prinzhorn, i quali, affascinati dalla produzione artistica dei loro pazienti, iniziarono a valorizzarla e ad analizzarla, raccoglierla e documentarla esso.

Proprio Dubuffet, entrato in contatto con questi studi, ne fu totalmente affascinato, al punto da credere che l'arte dei malati di mente potesse rappresentare la forma più pura di creazione artistica.

Inoltre, un libro in particolare, Bildnerei der Geisteskranken di Prinzhorn, in cui sono state analizzate migliaia di opere d'arte realizzate da persone malate di mente in varie istituzioni europee, ha influenzato la sua visione dell'arte.

Fu dopo aver letto quest'opera che Dubuffet iniziò la sua collezione personale, comprendente non solo l'arte creata dai malati di mente, ma anche la produzione di eccentrici, bambini, disadattati ed emarginati.

Questa collezione, chiamata "La Collection de l'Art Brut", è stata poi donata da Jean Dubuffet alla città di Losanna (Svizzera), dove è ancora in fase di sviluppo. Le opere presentate, nell'ambito di mostre permanenti o temporanee, mirano a incoraggiare i visitatori a pensare e comprendere questi artisti che non sono veramente artisti.

Quali sono le tecniche più comuni del movimento artistico Outsider Art?

In realtà non esistono tecniche rappresentative dell'arte outsider, perché ogni artista del movimento tende ad esprimere autonomamente la propria interiorità, seguendo la propria tendenza più naturale, semplice, diretta e istintiva. In effetti, le opere possono essere create su un'ampia varietà di supporti, come carta, cartone, cartone, muro, tela, rame e vetro.

Tuttavia, nell'opera di questo tipo di artisti si riscontrano frequentemente alcuni caratteri stilistici ricorrenti, come i motivi e le particolari modalità progettuali, molto ossessive e ripetitive.

Chi sono gli artisti e le opere famose?

Jean Dubuffet (1901 - 1985)

Jean Dubuffet, famoso pittore e scultore francese, è considerato il fondatore del movimento artistico Art Brut. Dopo aver frequentato per due anni l'Accademia di Belle Arti di Le Havre, sua città natale, si recò a Parigi nel 1918 per seguire i corsi dell'Académie Julian, istituzione che avrebbe lasciato solo sei mesi dopo. . Durante questo periodo formativo, il libro di Hans Prinzhorn sull'arte dei pazzi e la produzione artistica dei popoli primitivi esercitò su di lui una forte influenza. Tuttavia, la sua decisione di diventare pittore non divenne definitiva fino al 1942, periodo durante il quale fu ampiamente influenzato dal maestro espressionista Paul Klee. Ma è dal 1945 che inizia il suo vero percorso, periodo durante il quale Dubuffet teorizza e introduce il concetto di art brut. Adolf Wolfli (1864 - 1930)

Adolf Wölfli, pittore svizzero e principale rappresentante dell'Art Brut, è stato in gran parte segnato dalle vicende spiacevoli della sua infanzia, sconvolta in modo indelebile dalla presenza di un padre violento e dalla morte prematura della madre. Questi spiacevoli avvenimenti, sommati ai maltrattamenti che il giovane subì durante il suo lavoro nei campi, portarono il ragazzo a presentare gravi problemi comportamentali, tanto che fu prima incarcerato, poi, una volta accertato lo stato schizofrenico, internato in il manicomio di Waldau (Svizzera), dove rimarrà fino alla fine dei suoi giorni. Fu nell'ospedale psichiatrico che l'artista si consolò disegnando, prendendo gradualmente coscienza del suo talento, che sarà fortemente incoraggiato e valorizzato dallo psichiatra Walter Morgenthaler. Vale infine la pena sottolineare come l'artista abbia prodotto, durante i suoi trent'anni di attività, 1.300 disegni, diversi quaderni di scritti e una gigantesca biografia di ben 25.000 copie (La leggenda di Sant'Adolfo), opere che si trovano principalmente nella Museo delle Belle Arti di Berna.

Henry Darger (1892 - 1973)

Henry Darger, scrittore e illustratore americano, è meglio conosciuto per il suo fantastico manoscritto, che, intitolato The Realms of Unreal, è riccamente illustrato con alcuni dei migliori esempi di arte Outsider realizzati ad acquerello. Per quanto riguarda la vita dell'artista, Darger, dopo aver perso la madre all'età di quattro anni, ha vissuto con il padre premuroso fino a quando quest'ultimo, anziano e disabile, è stato portato in una casa di riposo. Dopo questo episodio, è finito prima in un manicomio cattolico per giovani, poi è stato trasferito in un manicomio, perché dichiarato malato di mente. La sofferenza di questa reclusione è stata ampiamente sublimata nell'opera letteraria Les filles de Vivian. Nel 1908 Darger riesce a fuggire dall'ospedale psichiatrico, ma il sapore della sua libertà è segnato da una forte monotonia esistenziale.

Howard Finster (1916 - 2001)

Howard Finster , artista e ministro battista americano, ha affermato di essere stato ispirato da Dio a diffondere il Vangelo attraverso la sua creazione artistica, comprese opere d'arte estranee, ingenue e visionarie.
