The inspiration for this work comes from the Forest of the Gods in Nara, Japan, where, 1300 years ago, Thunder is said to have descended upon the land, riding on the back of a white deer. Since that fateful day, the forest has been a protected natural sanctuary - a status it still holds today. Over the centuries, it has evolved into a rare, ancient woodland, home to extraordinary and divine life, with unique plant and animal species that cannot be found elsewhere. The sacred deer of Nara, considered messengers of the gods since that time, continue to roam its sacred grounds.
This story represents one of the world’s most beautiful tales of harmony- where natural spaces have been safeguarded for millennia, intertwined with cultural beliefs and traditions. Through this work, I hope to offer a reminder of the wondrous natural landscapes that surround us, and the cultural narratives that connect us to them. May this story inspire and strengthen our collective commitment to protect these sacred places for future generations.
