Gonzalo Borondo was born in Valladolid (ES) in 1989 and soon moved to Segovia, where he spent his childhood.
He developed a distinctive aptitude towards art as a child, initially expressed through painting and then extending the language of painting to disciplines, supports (glass, straw, ceramic, wall surfaces, wood…) and multiples aesthetic practices, in an experimental way.
The heart of his poetry is searching for nature and for what is sacred. His works examine the hanging area between earthly and celestial, the ancestral ties of the men, by a cyclic, ephemeral and eternal conception of human life.
Borondo settled in Madrid in 2003 and started painting in the public space, driven by the will of facing himself with the ultimate collective dimension, exploring the complex relationship between Art and “Public”, freedom and responsibility.
While a personal language is created, he started attending the studio of the painter Jose Garcia Herranz, deepening the resources of painting and ancient techniques, so as to understand that game and experimentation are essential aspects of creation.
He is invited to a festival of public art in Istanbul for the first time in 2010, where he started to face himself with large wall surfaces. Since then, he is involved in institutional projects of public art all over the world, realising avantgardistic paintings and installations, made by a dialectical relationship with the space and everybody in it, the contact with the memories of the places in which he works, result of shared reflections such as: “Les Trois Âges” (Paris, 2014), “Ophelia” (London, 2014), “Padre” (Sulitjelma, 2015), "Fer Llenya” (Barcelona, 2015), “L’origine du Monde” (New Dheli, 2016), Show (Jacksonville, 2016) and “Cenere”, permanent installation realised in the cemetery chapel of Selci (It, 2017).
He started displaying expositive projects in galleries and museums across Europe in 2012, such as “Animal”, his personal show in London in 2015, which reinforced his will of bringing different media and techniques together with intuition and mastery. His monograph “Memento Mori” is published in the same year, opening the doors of the archive of the artist.
2017 is the year when Borondo faces himself with a corpus of high complex works where installation prevailed, exalted by the interaction between sound, light and video, synthesized on glass, beloved support and object of research from the outset. Today his studies are focused on the will of liven painting up by innovative processes involving experts in multidisciplinary fields. Installations such as: “Hierarchie”, realized for the Berlin Urban Nation Museum (D, 2017) – “Aria”, at Catanzaro (IT,2017), a monumental work made of 185 serigraphed glass panels and “Ubiquitas”, realized within the collective show “Il Paradiso Inclinato” at the Ex Dogana of Rome (IT, 2016). Glass becomes subject of dynamic paintings between visible and invisible. Transparent matter meets the landscape blending with its variable elements: context creates the work, which canges (with) the space.
Borondo’s research of the past years were attracted to the expositive project “Matiére Noire”, personal show realised within the “Marché aux Puches”, one of the major flea market in Europe. The show denotes a high level of experimentation and it was performed using almost exclusively materials found in the workplace, in collaboration with eight international artists who met in the French residence. “Matiére Noire” goes further than the traditional concept of “exposition”, constituting a totalising experiential project.
He got the award Arte Laguna within the section “Land Art and Urban Art” in 2018.
