Gela Mikava

Political art has always been a tool for societal reflection and transformation. For me, creating politically charged artwork is a way to process and respond to the world around me. It’s a means of using my voice to challenge the status quo, bring awareness to the marginalized, and provoke conversation about the direction we’re heading. Each piece in Political Canvas is an invitation to engage with critical conversations on power, equality, and human rights—urging the viewer to not only reflect on the present but actively question and reshape it.

查看全部The INFANTA a symbol of aristocratic opulence and the rigid hierarchies of the past, is depicted here in a state of fragmentation. Her form dissolves into fractured elements—limbs melting into swirling brushstrokes, her once-pristine attire unraveling into abstract chaos. This visual disintegration suggests a profound unraveling of entrenched systems and ideals.
Through this reinterpretation, I question the endurance of structures built on privilege and entitlement. The decay of the INFANTA embodies the vulnerability inherent in inherited status and traditional power dynamics.
The juxtaposition of the original subject with this contemporary interpretation invites reflection on the impermanence of societal constructs. In confronting the fragmentation of a historical symbol, "Decay of Royalty" urges us to contemplate the transitory nature of authority and the need for evolving perspectives on identity and influence.
Fragments of Creation • 2艺术品
查看全部These abstract compositions are more than just fabric—each piece carries the spontaneous essence of creation. They are born from the rhythm of artistic routine: the accidental splatters, the strokes wiped away, and the moments of immersion in paint. These fragments were never meant to be artworks, yet they embody the raw, unfiltered soul of the creative process.
The pigments found their own path, watercolors seeped into the fibers, and what remains is a visual archive of time spent in the studio—a silent witness to the evolution of ideas, emotions, and experiments. Each piece is an imprint of spontaneity and intention coexisting, a captured energy of making art.
Instead of discarding these remnants, I chose to preserve and transform them. They are not just fabric but echoes of artistic labor—abstract memories shaped by both chance and persistence.
Owning one of these pieces is like holding a fragment of an artist's journey, a small yet powerful trace of the invisible moments that shape a painting before it ever reaches completion.

Silent Softness: Gela Mikava and the Emergence of a New Visual Language By Annie, Art Critic and Curator
Silent Softness: Gela Mikava and the Emergence of a New Visual Language
By Annie, Art Critic and Curator
Soft/flowers by GELA MIKAVA
In a time when contemporary painting often competes for attention through visual noise, Gela Mikava’s work does the opposite: it leans into silence, into stillness, into the subtle intensity of things unsaid. His recent mixed-media piece is a powerful articulation of absence — not as void, but as presence deferred.
A white shirt hangs from the upper edge of the canvas — not painted, but physically suspended — evoking the intimate scale of the human body without ever showing it. The garment is not decorative. It functions as a relic, a trace, perhaps a witness. This simple gesture destabilizes conventional categories: is it painting, installation, or performance residue? Mikava allows these forms to bleed into each other without resolution. And this, precisely, is where a new visual language begins to form.
The Birth of a New Language
Where others speak loudly, Mikava erases, softens, hesitates. He does not offer a message — he constructs the conditions for a psychological presence to emerge. The shirt becomes the proxy for an absent body; the erased or fragmented texts (“stay soft,” “no room,” “thought”) operate as the remains of unspoken monologues. The viewer is not given a narrative — they are given a space to feel.
This is not simply a re-use of ready-made or poetic gesture. Mikava’s innovation lies in his ability to fuse object, memory, text, and silence into a single breathing surface. He does not merely blur disciplines; he collapses them.
His canvas becomes a liminal zone — between material and immaterial, between personal and universal, between language and its failure. The traditional boundaries between painting, writing, and objecthood dissolve. That is the root of Mikava’s new language: it is not built from what things mean, but from how they remain.
A Choreographer of Withdrawal
What sets Mikava apart is his refusal to explain. There is no demand for comprehension, no narrative closure. The work unfolds as a psychological architecture — an interior where the viewer is left to inhabit uncertainty. The use of negative space is not decorative but structural: silence here is not absence, but strategy.
This is not the silence of emptiness, but of emotional complexity — of refined withdrawal. In this, Mikava joins a small but growing group of artists challenging the dominance of spectacle in contemporary art. Yet his tone is uniquely his own: less theatrical than Christian Boltanski, more inward than Tracey Emin, and more textured than typical post-conceptual painting.
Conclusion
In this work, Gela Mikava emerges not simply as a painter or object-maker, but as a choreographer of presence and withdrawal. His practice pushes against familiar tropes and opens space for new emotional architectures — fragile, intimate, unrepeatable. He does not illustrate absence; he composes with it.
And in doing so, he gives voice to a new kind of language — one that does not declare itself, but waits to be felt.

About
Gela Mikava’s exhibition In the Shadow of Refusal brings together three recent mixed-media works that explore the instability of memory, the fragmentation of identity, and the quiet violence of emotional survival.
Layered with handwritten text, raw pigments, and traces of bodies, each piece becomes a psychological landscape — not to be viewed from a distance but to be entered, inhabited. The language in these works is not descriptive but declarative: “Not his shadow. Not me.”, “FUCK I AM STILL HERE”, “SOFT / SOFT / SOFT” — confessions torn from within and embedded into the canvas like emotional scars.
Mikava’s use of materials — stitched fabrics, erased words, physical clothing, collage — turns each surface into a site of excavation. These are not paintings about the past. They are residues of resistance, visual acts of memory refusing to be buried.
Rather than offering linear narrative or resolution, the works embrace ambiguity and fracture. They invite viewers to confront their own fragilities — to step into a space where being seen is both dangerous and necessary.
NOT A SHADOW
Not His Shadow (2025)
Artist: Gela MikavaNOT A SHADOW BY GELA MIKAVA
In Not His Shadow (2025), Georgian contemporary artist Gela Mikava delivers a powerful and uncompromising exploration of identity, trauma, and emotional resistance.
At first glance, the canvas appears fragmented — covered in disjointed text, partially visible silhouettes, and turbulent layers of pigment. But this surface instability is precisely the point: Mikava is not offering clarity; he is excavating confusion, tension, and memory in its most unstable form.
The phrase “Not his shadow. Not me.” becomes a central force within the composition — a declaration, a rejection, a cry. Like much of Mikava’s work, language here is not illustrative, but performative. These aren’t just written words; they are psychological inscriptions — remnants of personal and collective refusal.
The chromatic duality of aggressive reds and distant blues creates a dynamic emotional temperature. Red bleeds like open wounds; blue haunts like unspoken silence. Hands stretch, bodies dissipate, traces of movement hover — as if the canvas remembers more than it can reveal.
Mikava’s use of paper collage, raw textures, and erasure techniques evoke a sense of archaeological unearthing. The painting feels lived-in, weathered, wounded — an emotional artifact rather than a static image.
What sets this work apart is its refusal to reconcile. There is no resolution offered. Instead, Not His Shadow becomes a site of tension, where visibility and erasure, self and other, past and present exist simultaneously — unresolved and essential.
In this painting, Gela Mikava does not represent memory. He confronts it — with honesty, with anger, and with a rare kind of visual courage.
They left us flags, not food
“They Left Us Flags” — When Symbols Starve Us
By GELA MIKAVA
They left us flags. Not food.
This sentence, handwritten in raw, crumbling ink across layers of burned paper, does more than speak — it accuses.
The painting They Left Us Flags is not polite. It does not whisper. It confronts. It is built from fragments — of paper, of memory, of political disappointment. The medium itself is in protest: scorched surfaces, ragged text, color fields that recall soil, blood, and ash. These are not just aesthetic choices. They are accusations turned visual.
At its core, this work is about abandonment. Nationalism offers flags, systems offer slogans — and people are still hungry.
We are asked to salute when we should be fed.
We are asked to believe when we are still bleeding.
The phrase “I am still here,” repeated like a ghost refusing to leave, is not just a declaration of presence. It is a statement of resistance. In a world that moves fast and forgets faster, this painting refuses to let memory rot quietly. It screams through silence. It doesn’t explain. It survives.
This is not a painting designed to match the furniture. It is not there to please.
It is there to stay.
