Der Maler Franz Marc meldete sich nach Kriegsausbruch im August 1914 als Kriegsfreiwilliger. Wie viele andere Künstler und Intellektuelle versprach er sich vom Krieg eine reinigende und heilende Wirkung für „ein krankes Europa“.
Seine anfängliche Kriegsbegeisterung wich tiefer Erschütterung, was sich auch in seinen Briefen aus dem Feld widerspiegelt. Künstlerisch konnte er sich als Soldat wenig betätigen, einzig überliefert ist sein kleines Skizzenbuch aus dem Feld im Format 10 cm x 16 cm mit 36 kleinformatigen Bleistiftzeichnungen.
1916 wurde Marc für die Liste der bedeutendsten Künstler Deutschlands ausgewählt und sollte vom Kriegsdienst befreit werden. Am 4. März 1916 wurde er jedoch an seinem letzten Einsatztag auf einem Melderitt unweit von Verdun durch einen Granatsplitter tödlich verletzt. Es ist anzunehmen, dass Franz Marc nach einer heilen Rückkehr aus dem Krieg seine Skizzen zu Gemälden ausgearbeitet hätte.
100 Jahre später nahm Franz Hümpfner diese Skizzen als Anregung für seine gemalten Acrylbilder im Format 75 cm x 129 cm. Er versteht diese Gemälde als Hommage an Franz Marc.
The painter Franz Marc volunteered after the outbreak of war in August 1914. Like many other artists and intellectuals, he hoped the war would have a cleansing and healing effect on “a sick Europe”.
His initial enthusiasm for the war gave way to deeper shock, which is also reflected in his letters from the field. As a soldier he was not able to do very much artistically, only his small sketchbook from the field in the format 10 cm x 16 cm with 36 small-format pencil drawings has survived.
In 1916 Marc was selected for the list of the most important artists in Germany and was to be exempted from military service. On March 4, 1916, however, he was fatally injured by a shrapnel on his last day of work on a reporting ride not far from Verdun. It can be assumed that Franz Marc would have turned his sketches into paintings after a safe return from the war.
100 years later, Franz Hümpfner took these sketches as inspiration for his acrylic paintings in the format 75 cm x 129 cm. He sees these paintings as an homage to Franz Marc.
