I grew up from a very common family of carpenters and furniture makers in Batangas City, Philippines. I still clearly remember when I was about 8 years old, I asked my grandfather if I can help him with an old piano he’s trying to restore so he taught me how to remove the old worn paint on the piano. The chemical we were using to remove the paint was quite sticky and irritating on the skin but even on my early age, I really enjoyed what I was doing.

As time goes by I realized I really love working and building things with my own hands. When other kids would ask their parents to buy them toys, I prefer making them. Also, I noticed myself having a deeper attachment with the beauty in nature especially in the afternoon skies. Everytime I watch the afternoon skies just before the sun sets, I always tell myself, maybe God is a painter or an artist, because this beauty that I see in nature everyday is way more than just an old masterpiece. It’s astoundingly breathtaking.

My mother once told me I started drawing figures on paper using a pencil when I was 5 or 6 years old. And she said my very first drawing was a figure that looks like a frog. At the age of 8 to 10, I started reading the works of some old famous Filipino artists such as Juan Luna and Fernando Amorsolo. My interest in painting never stop since then. I started to explore different mediums from water color, acrylic and then later oil. And everyday, I did my best to study the old master’s works and apply what I’ve learned on my own work while adding my own touch to it just to give it a little more of “me”.

Now I mainly use oil as my primary medium and for my painting surface, most of the time I use canvas-boards (cotton-duck or linen glued on wood panel). Canvas-boards are perfect for me because I like painting on a rigid surface while still getting the texture of a canvas. While I really love to capture the beauty of nature around me in paint, somehow (and I’m not sure if it has something to do with artists or people in general growing old), I noticed something bizarrely profound in ordinary things such as an old bin on the side of a busy street for example, or an old abandoned ticket booth of an old park, on things normally neglected by ordinary people. I always have this feeling that if I also capture these “ordinary things” in paint, people may find or learn something extraordinary from it, which I think would be awesome.

Aside from painting (or in-between my painting sessions), I also love playing musical instruments. I particularly love playing my guitar and sometimes ukulele and flute. I also love writing songs and poetry. Poetry for me is like painting, only in poetry I used ink as a medium instead of paint. But, both of them helps me deliver my message, which is always from the heart.
