Holt started the Holt/Smithson Foundation in 2017 to carry on the creative and curious spirit of both her and her late husband's work. They used sculpture to find new ways to look at how humans relate to the planet. Holt started out as a photographer, but then she became interested in Earth art as part of the Land Art movement. Her photography gave her ideas for her later works, which were mostly about keeping track of where the earth, sun, and stars were in relation to a fixed point. When people see De Maria's work, they can either walk inside the grid or look at it from a distance, which gives them a sensory and spiritual experience. Dennis Oppenheim (1938 – 2011)

Dennis Oppenheim, an American painter, sculptor, and photographer, was also an important Land artist. Most people know him for his 1968 piece Annual Rings, in which he drew large concentric circles in the ice that covered a river.
